The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of heavy machinery and vehicles, ensuring operational efficiency and safety. This role requires expertise in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, particularly those found in diesel-powered equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnosis and Troubleshooting:
- Inspect and test heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, loaders) to detect faults and malfunctions.
- Utilize diagnostic tools, computerized testing equipment, and technical manuals to determine the extent of repair required.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic system issues.
- Repair and Maintenance:
- Perform complex repairs, including disassembling, repairing, and reassembling major components such as engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, and braking systems.
- Adjust, repair, or replace defective parts, components, or systems using hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment.
- Fabricate, modify, or install replacement parts or special equipment as needed.
- Preventive Maintenance:
- Conduct routine maintenance and safety inspections on equipment (e.g., oil changes, lubrication, fluid checks, filter replacements) to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life.
- Service and maintain working tools and attachments.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all repairs, maintenance activities, and parts inventory.
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company, safety, and regulatory standards.
- Teamwork and Support:
- Collaborate with other mechanics, operators, and supervisors to schedule and coordinate maintenance tasks.
- Provide on-site field service and emergency repairs as required (for Field Mechanic roles).
Skills
- Completion of a vocational, technical, or apprenticeship program in diesel technology, heavy equipment repair, or a related field is often preferred.
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Heavy Duty Mechanic Certification, ASE Certifications) are a major asset.
- Experience:
- Proven experience (typically 3-5+ years) as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic working on diesel engines and heavy machinery.
- Technical Knowledge:
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and electrical circuits.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Skilled in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, hoists, and diagnostic software.
- Soft Skills:

- Strong attention to detail and ability to work without direct supervision.
