Summary

The Consultant in Fetal Medicine provides assessment, diagnosis, and management of fetal conditions and high-risk pregnancies.

Education/Qualification

Qualification Source from North America, Western Europe, Australia or New Zealand.

• Basic medical degree from recognized institution
• Post-qualification certification
  • USA: American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG)
  • Canada: Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Certificate in Obstetrics and Gynecology (FRCPC)
  • UK and Ireland: GMC/CCST Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Australia and New Zealand: Fellowship from the Royal College in Obstetrics and Gynecology (FRACP)

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience post-board/equivalent certification in the following regions: Austria, Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland (CCST), United Kingdom (CCT), Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland. Sub-specialties require a minimum of two (2) years of experience post-sub-specialty certification in the listed countries.

License

• Current and in good standing medical license to practice in the country of residence

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and management of pregnancies with fetal abnormalities, genetic conditions, multiple pregnancies, fetal growth disorders, and maternal medical conditions affecting pregnancy
• Perform and interpret advanced fetal ultrasound examinations, including detailed anatomical scans, fetal echocardiography (where trained), Doppler studies, and assessment of fetal growth and well-being
• Conduct prenatal diagnostic procedures as appropriate (e.g., amniocentesis, CVS, and other fetal investigations)
• Develop individualized care plans and provide ongoing surveillance for high-risk pregnancies
• Provide preconception and prenatal counseling regarding fetal abnormalities, genetic risks, pregnancy complications, treatment options, prognosis, and outcomes
• Collaborate with obstetricians, neonatologists, pediatric subspecialists, genetic counselors, radiologists, anesthesiologists, and other professionals to deliver multidisciplinary care
• Lead specialized fetal medicine clinics, review referrals, and provide expert consultation for complex maternal and fetal cases
• Participate in multidisciplinary fetal meetings to discuss diagnosis, management, delivery planning, and neonatal care
• Perform or support fetal therapeutic interventions within scope of practice
• Monitor maternal and fetal outcomes and adjust management plans as needed
• Communicate sensitively with patients and families regarding diagnoses, risks, options, and outcomes
• Supervise and provide clinical guidance to junior doctors, residents, fellows, sonographers, and medical students
• Participate in clinical teaching, case discussions, training activities, and mentorship
• Contribute to development of fetal medicine protocols, clinical pathways, quality improvement, and service development
• Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation in line with policies and standards
• Comply with patient safety, informed consent, infection prevention, and accreditation requirements
• Participate in clinical audits, research, morbidity and mortality reviews, and ongoing professional development
