The Electrical Technician – Plant Maintenance is a full‑time role focused on the preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance of electrical assets in a large industrial plant. The technician supports critical plant equipment such as low‑ and high‑voltage motors, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and other electrical circuits. All tasks are carried out under approved authorisation procedures while maintaining accurate technical records and equipment history.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive, predictive, corrective, and troubleshooting maintenance on plant electrical equipment.
- Inspect, test, repair, and maintain low‑voltage and high‑voltage electrical systems.
- Isolate and energise LV and HV motors in accordance with approved authorisation procedures.
- Carry out electrical isolation activities for transformers, generators, UPS systems, and related circuits.
- Accept, verify, and complete electrical isolation confirmation certificates.
- Confirm that equipment is safely de‑energised before maintenance activities begin.
- Apply approved electrical safety procedures when returning equipment to service.
- Diagnose electrical faults using structured testing and troubleshooting methods.
- Investigate problems affecting motors, transformers, generators, control circuits, and power‑distribution equipment.
- Use approved electrical testing instruments to identify defects and confirm equipment condition.
- Escalate complex faults requiring additional engineering or specialist support.
- Conduct routine visual inspections and condition checks on electrical equipment.
- Identify signs of overheating, insulation damage, loose connections, abnormal noise, vibration, or deterioration.
- Perform scheduled checks to maintain equipment in an efficient and reliable operating condition.
- Complete corrective repairs and component replacement according to maintenance instructions.
- Identify the spare parts, materials, tools, and test equipment required for each task.
- Obtain approved parts and resources before starting maintenance work.
- Verify that replacement components meet the required technical specifications.
- Carry out new electrical installations, modifications, and equipment testing.
- Complete installation and testing activities in stages according to approved plans.
- Follow supervisor instructions, drawings, technical standards, and manufacturer requirements.
- Verify electrical parameters during installation, testing, and commissioning.
- Support the energisation and operational testing of newly installed or modified equipment.
- Identify opportunities to improve maintenance methods, equipment reliability, and work execution.
- Provide practical input to senior personnel regarding required modifications.
- Assist with implementing approved improvements to electrical systems and maintenance practices.
- Verify completed maintenance work through inspection, testing, and operational checks.
- Complete maintenance activity sheets, surveys, and job‑completion documentation.
- Confirm that assigned work has been performed according to technical and safety requirements.
- Record fault details, test results, repair actions, and parts replaced.
- Update work orders to maintain accurate equipment failure and maintenance history.
- Enter required maintenance information into approved plant systems.
- Support analysis of repeated electrical failures by providing complete job records.
- Contribute technical input to the preparation of method statements.
- Identify unsafe conditions and initiate near‑miss reports where required.
- Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and job‑safety discussions.
- Maintain current electrical drawings, equipment records, and technical documents.
- Mark up drawings when modifications or field changes are identified.
- Ensure updated documents remain accessible for future maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Follow company health, safety, environmental, and permit‑to‑work requirements.
- Maintain good housekeeping around electrical equipment and maintenance areas.
- Use personal protective equipment and insulated tools as required.
- Coordinate with operations, supervisors, and other maintenance disciplines during equipment intervention.
- Support shutdown, startup, and emergency maintenance activities when assigned.
Ideal Profile
- Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a related electrical discipline.
- Secondary School Certificate supported by a recognised vocational trade certificate may also be considered.
- Minimum 4 years of practical experience maintaining electrical equipment in a large industrial plant.
- Previous experience in the oil and gas, petrochemical, energy, or process industry is preferred.
- Hands‑on knowledge of low‑ and high‑voltage electrical equipment.
- Experience maintaining motors, transformers, generators, UPS systems, and electrical circuits.
- Strong electrical fault‑finding, diagnosis, and troubleshooting capability.
- Familiarity with preventive, predictive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance.
- Experience performing electrical isolation and energisation under approved authorisation systems.
- Understanding of permit‑to‑work, isolation certificates, and electrical safety controls.
- Ability to read electrical drawings, schematics, equipment manuals, and technical instructions.
- Experience using multimeters, insulation testers, and related electrical testing instruments.
- Ability to perform equipment installation, modification, testing, and commissioning support.
- Strong awareness of industrial health, safety, environmental, and housekeeping requirements.
- Ability to complete maintenance records, work orders, fault reports, and activity sheets accurately.
- Familiarity with computerised maintenance management systems is beneficial.
- Good teamwork, communication, and coordination skills.
- Ability to work safely under operational pressure and during urgent maintenance situations.
