Role Context
The Design and Technology Technician will provide hands-on technical support for practical learning spaces at Muna British Academy. The position is responsible for preparing equipment and materials before lessons, maintaining machinery and hand tools, supporting teachers during practical activities, and keeping workshops organized and compliant with health and safety requirements. As the academy expands its secondary provision, the technician will play an important part in ensuring students can use modern Design and Technology facilities safely and effectively. The role also supports digital manufacturing activities through CAD-CAM and CNC equipment while maintaining accurate records for stock, maintenance, controlled substances, and specialist resources.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare tools, specialist equipment, machinery, and materials before Design and Technology lessons.
- Ensure students are provided with appropriate personal protective equipment for each practical activity.
- Maintain workshops and specialist teaching areas in accordance with school health and safety procedures.
- Support departmental trial projects before they are introduced into live classroom activities.
- Assist with annual health and safety checks and maintain relevant workshop documentation.
- Set up practical resources and equipment according to instructions from teaching staff.
- Provide technical assistance during lessons while following guidance from the class teacher.
- Support students with appropriate use of tools, machinery, and practical processes.
- Prepare materials in the required quantities before lessons, including cutting, gluing, and basic fabrication work.
- Produce jigs, moulds, patterns, and project components for new and ongoing classroom activities.
- Organize student projects, tools, and equipment and ensure items are stored safely.
- Maintain clearly labelled and orderly storage systems for workshop tools.
- Monitor stock levels and notify the Head of Department when replacement materials or equipment are required.
- Place and receive authorized orders and ensure deliveries are checked and stored appropriately.
- Carry out daily checks on classroom and workshop machinery.
- Perform routine equipment cleaning, oiling, blade changes, adjustments, and minor maintenance within authorized limits.
- Maintain monitoring logs covering machinery checks and maintenance activity.
- Inspect and maintain hand tools including saws, planes, drill bits, chisels, and marking tools.
- Replace, reset, sharpen, or repair cutting components where appropriate.
- Coordinate annual machinery servicing carried out by approved contractors.
- Maintain electronic records of substances and materials covered by COSHH requirements.
- Ensure controlled materials are stored and handled according to safety guidance.
- Support teachers in preparing displays for Design and Technology projects, exhibitions, and school events.
- Help maintain Art and Design Technology display areas for both on-site and external activities.
- Ensure workshops and art studios are left clean and safe after lessons.
- Remove waste materials and prevent trip or slip hazards.
- Clean machinery and working surfaces so facilities are ready for the next class.
- Operate CAD-CAM equipment and process student project files.
- Monitor student production work across CNC machinery and other digital manufacturing equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of workshop equipment, resources, maintenance, and technical support activities.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor 's degree.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar technical, workshop, school, fabrication, or Design and Technology support role.
- Practical experience operating workshop machinery and specialist equipment.
- Familiarity with CAD-CAM systems and CNC equipment is highly valuable.
- Ability to prepare project materials accurately and efficiently.
- Experience maintaining hand tools and workshop machinery.
- Good understanding of personal protective equipment and practical safety requirements.
- Awareness of COSHH requirements and safe storage of controlled materials.
- Strong organizational skills for stock, tools, resources, and maintenance documentation.
- Fluent written and spoken English.
- Strong interpersonal skills for working with students, teachers, parents, contractors, and colleagues.
- Professional approach to safeguarding and student wellbeing.
