Role Context
The Corrosion Engineer provides specialist technical support for controlling deterioration of equipment, piping, pipelines, wells and associated process facilities. The position evaluates corrosion mechanisms, metallurgy, operating conditions and inspection findings to determine equipment condition and recommend practical mitigation measures. By integrating corrosion monitoring, materials engineering, Risk Based Inspection and Integrity Operating Window principles, the role contributes directly to asset reliability, process safety and extended equipment service life.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement corrosion control policies and technical programs covering static equipment, piping, pipelines and associated facilities.
- Plan and execute corrosion mitigation activities including cathodic protection, chemical treatment, internal corrosion monitoring, coating inspection and failure investigation.
- Conduct corrosion inspections on pipelines, well casing, tubing, processing equipment, transmission systems and storage facilities.
- Analyze inspection findings and corrosion data to determine deterioration rates and recommend appropriate remedial actions.
- Investigate corrosion-related failures affecting wells, process equipment, piping and other operating assets.
- Plan routine and non-routine cathodic protection surveys and evaluate system effectiveness against applicable protection criteria.
- Recommend improvements to cathodic protection systems where monitoring results indicate inadequate protection.
- Establish and maintain coating monitoring programs for equipment, structures and facilities.
- Assess coating degradation and prepare technically appropriate coating repair and rehabilitation programs.
- Verify surface preparation and coating application activities against approved engineering specifications.
- Participate in intelligent pipeline inspection activities and evaluate recorded inspection data.
- Develop inspection and repair programs based on pipeline condition and integrity findings.
- Review information obtained from electrochemical probes, weight-loss coupons and other corrosion monitoring devices.
- Assess the effectiveness of internal corrosion control measures and recommend adjustments when required.
- Monitor chemical treatment programs and verify that corrosion inhibitor strategies are properly implemented and evaluated.
- Review operating conditions and process environments to identify potentially corrosive service conditions.
- Evaluate equipment metallurgy and material suitability for corrosive streams and recommend upgrades where necessary.
- Review corrosion mitigation requirements for new projects, facility modifications and engineering changes.
- Ensure appropriate corrosion protection measures are incorporated into design proposals, material specifications and equipment selection.
- Participate in plant corrosion inspections during shutdown and turnaround activities.
- Investigate equipment and piping failures during shutdowns and determine underlying corrosion or metallurgical causes.
- Carry out Remaining Life Assessment for long-service high-temperature and high-pressure equipment when required.
- Prepare scopes for in-situ metallography and conduct replica metallography to evaluate equipment microstructure condition.
- Analyze metallographic findings and issue technical condition assessment reports.
- Identify austenitic stainless steel equipment susceptible to Polythionic Stress Corrosion Cracking and ensure required neutralisation is completed before equipment opening.
- Collect corrosion products and deteriorated material samples for laboratory examination and failure analysis.
- Review internal inspection findings and initiate Root Cause Analysis or Remaining Life Assessment studies where warranted.
- Perform detailed reviews of refinery process circuits and establish corrosion loops.
- Identify applicable damage mechanisms for each corrosion loop.
- Define and monitor Integrity Operating Windows for corrosion-sensitive process systems.
- Participate actively in Risk Based Inspection program implementation and ongoing optimization.
- Maintain computer-based corrosion and materials information systems with inspection, testing and analysis results.
- Ensure corrosion history, equipment condition and major integrity concerns are accurately documented for future monitoring and decision-making.
- Provide technical recommendations that improve equipment integrity, corrosion resistance and long-term plant reliability.
Ideal Profile
- Bachelor Degree in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline.
- Minimum 8 years of relevant corrosion, materials or asset integrity experience.
- Strong experience in corrosion monitoring and mitigation within refinery, Oil and Gas or petrochemical facilities.
- Practical knowledge of cathodic protection systems and associated survey techniques.
- Experience with internal corrosion monitoring methods including coupons and electrochemical probes.
- Strong understanding of corrosion inhibitor and chemical treatment programs.
- Knowledge of coating systems, surface preparation requirements and coating inspection practices.
- Experience conducting corrosion failure investigations and recommending corrective measures.
- Understanding of materials selection, metallurgy and degradation mechanisms affecting process equipment.
- Familiarity with high-temperature and high-pressure equipment integrity evaluation.
- Practical knowledge of Remaining Life Assessment methodologies.
- Experience with Risk Based Inspection concepts and implementation.
- Ability to define corrosion loops, damage mechanisms and Integrity Operating Windows.
- Knowledge of Polythionic Stress Corrosion Cracking risks affecting austenitic stainless steels.
- Experience supporting refinery shutdowns and major turnaround inspection programs.
- Familiarity with intelligent pipeline inspection techniques and interpretation of inspection results.
- Strong analytical capability for evaluating corrosion trends, material degradation and inspection data.
- Ability to prepare technical reports and communicate integrity recommendations to operations, inspection and engineering stakeholders.
