Role Context
The Consultant Pediatric Emergency Physician will provide consultant‑level care for children presenting with urgent and life‑threatening conditions across medical, surgical, and trauma pathways. The role combines rapid assessment, resuscitation, procedural care, multidisciplinary coordination, emergency preparedness, and clinical leadership. By working closely with pediatric subspecialists, intensivists, surgeons, nursing teams, and diagnostic services, the consultant will help improve stabilization times, patient safety, clinical outcomes, and continuity of care within the pediatric emergency service.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, diagnose, and manage infants, children, and adolescents presenting with acute medical, surgical, and trauma‑related emergencies.
- Provide immediate stabilization for critically ill or injured pediatric patients.
- Lead advanced pediatric resuscitation during life‑threatening emergencies.
- Perform airway management and endotracheal intubation when clinically required.
- Carry out lumbar puncture procedures for appropriate diagnostic indications.
- Provide procedural sedation for emergency interventions requiring pain control or patient cooperation.
- Manage pediatric trauma using structured assessment, stabilization, and multidisciplinary treatment pathways.
- Establish vascular access and coordinate rapid administration of fluids, medications, and blood products where indicated.
- Diagnose and manage respiratory distress, seizures, severe infections, dehydration, shock, allergic reactions, and other time‑sensitive pediatric conditions.
- Identify clinical deterioration quickly and elevate patients to Pediatric Intensive Care or other specialist services.
- Collaborate with pediatricians, intensivists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, radiologists, and other subspecialists on complex emergency cases.
- Supervise junior physicians and provide consultant support during challenging diagnostic and treatment decisions.
- Maintain efficient clinical handovers and support safe patient movement through assessment, observation, admission, transfer, or discharge.
- Provide clear explanations to parents and caregivers regarding diagnosis, treatment, procedures, prognosis, and follow‑up needs.
- Maintain complete consultation notes, procedure records, resuscitation documentation, treatment plans, and discharge instructions.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and disaster response planning.
- Contribute to departmental simulations, emergency drills, and high‑acuity response protocols.
- Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Support teaching and mentoring of residents, junior physicians, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Contribute to clinical research, case presentations, continuing medical education, and departmental development.
- Maintain rigorous infection prevention and control standards within the emergency environment.
- Apply evidence‑based pediatric emergency protocols and relevant UAE regulatory requirements throughout clinical practice.
Ideal Profile
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized institution.
- Board Certification or Fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
- Emergency Medicine specialists with recognized Pediatric Emergency subspecialty training may also be considered.
- Appropriate UAE Consultant License or eligibility to obtain the required professional license.
- Minimum 5-7 years of post‑board consultant experience in pediatric emergency medicine.
- Strong clinical experience within tertiary‑care pediatric emergency departments.
- Advanced competence in pediatric resuscitation, trauma care, airway management, and acute stabilization.
- Experience performing intubation, lumbar puncture, procedural sedation, and emergency trauma interventions.
- PALS certification is preferred.
- ACLS certification is preferred.
- ATLS certification is preferred.
- Experience in pediatric trauma centers or academic hospitals is advantageous.
- Exposure to pediatric critical care and disaster medicine is desirable.
- Strong leadership and decision‑making ability during high‑pressure situations.
- Excellent communication skills when supporting children, families, and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
- Research, academic teaching, or quality improvement experience is an advantage.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast‑paced multicultural healthcare environment.
