Qualifications

Role Context The Consultant - Pain Medicine and Intervention will provide specialist evaluation and long-term management for patients experiencing acute, persistent, neuropathic, musculoskeletal, cancer-related, and other complex pain conditions. The role combines medical treatment with advanced interventional techniques and close multidisciplinary coordination to reduce pain, restore function, and improve quality of life. Collaboration with Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Physiotherapy will be central to developing comprehensive treatment strategies for difficult cases.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive consultations for patients presenting with acute and chronic pain.
• Evaluate pain characteristics, functional limitations, previous treatments, medical history, and contributing conditions.
• Diagnose musculoskeletal, neuropathic, spinal, cancer-related, and other complex pain syndromes.
• Develop individualized pain management plans based on diagnosis, severity, functional goals, and patient preferences.
• Prescribe and monitor appropriate pharmacological treatment according to evidence-based pain medicine practice.
• Integrate non-pharmacological treatment strategies into comprehensive pain management plans.
• Perform diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks within approved clinical privileges.
• Conduct epidural steroid injections for appropriate spinal pain conditions.
• Perform radiofrequency ablation for selected chronic pain syndromes.
• Administer image-guided joint injections where clinically indicated.
• Undertake other interventional pain procedures according to training, credentialing, and patient need.
• Use appropriate imaging guidance to improve procedural accuracy and safety.
• Assess procedural indications, contraindications, expected benefits, and potential complications before intervention.
• Provide clear pre-procedure counselling and obtain informed consent.
• Monitor patients after pain interventions and identify complications requiring further management.
• Review treatment response and modify pharmacological, procedural, or rehabilitation strategies as required.
• Coordinate care with orthopedic surgeons for musculoskeletal and joint-related pain.
• Collaborate with neurosurgeons and neurologists for spinal and neuropathic pain conditions.
• Work with oncologists to support management of cancer-related pain.
• Coordinate rehabilitation goals with Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation specialists and physiotherapists.
• Educate patients and families on pain management strategies, medication use, physical activity, pacing, and lifestyle modification.
• Support patients in establishing realistic functional and quality-of-life goals.
• Maintain accurate consultation notes, procedural records, medication plans, consent documentation, and follow-up information.
• Follow UAE healthcare regulations, hospital policies, infection prevention procedures, and patient safety standards.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences for complex chronic pain patients.
• Contribute to clinical audit, quality improvement, service development, and continuing medical education.
• Supervise and mentor junior physicians and allied healthcare professionals where appropriate.
• Maintain current knowledge of interventional pain procedures, pharmacological therapies, image-guided techniques, and evidence-based pain medicine.

Ideal Profile

• MBBS or an equivalent recognized medical degree.
• Completed accredited residency training in Anesthesiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, or another appropriately related specialty.
• Fellowship or recognized subspecialty certification in Pain Medicine or Pain Management.
• Board Certification in the primary specialty and relevant Pain Management qualification.
• Valid UAE professional license or eligibility for appropriate consultant licensing.
• Minimum 3-5 years of post-board consultant experience in Pain Management.
• Strong experience treating a broad spectrum of acute and chronic pain disorders.
• Proven expertise in interventional pain medicine is highly desirable.
• Practical experience performing nerve blocks, epidural steroid injections, radiofrequency procedures, and joint injections.
• Strong competence in image-guided pain interventions.
• Previous experience in a tertiary-care hospital is advantageous.
• Strong understanding of multimodal pain management and functional rehabilitation principles.
• Excellent procedural judgment and clinical decision-making skills.
• Ability to recognize patients requiring surgical, neurological, oncological, or rehabilitation referral.
• Strong communication and patient counselling capabilities.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
