Role Context
The Consultant Haematologist and Oncologist will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care for patients with complex haematological diseases while playing a central role in the hospital 's transplant program. The position combines diagnostic haematology, systemic cancer treatment, stem cell transplantation, complication management, long-term surveillance, and multidisciplinary decision-making. Through advanced BMT and HSCT expertise, the consultant will help strengthen treatment pathways for patients with aggressive blood cancers and other conditions requiring intensive cellular therapy.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consultant-level inpatient and outpatient assessment for patients with malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic leukaemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and other blood cancers.
- Evaluate patients for Bone Marrow Transplantation and Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation based on disease status, treatment history, comorbidities, and clinical suitability.
- Manage both autologous and allogeneic stem cell transplantation programs.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-transplant assessments and coordinate required investigations before conditioning.
- Develop individualized conditioning regimens according to diagnosis, transplant type, patient risk, and recognized treatment protocols.
- Manage stem cell mobilisation and coordinate collection procedures with relevant clinical and laboratory teams.
- Oversee transplant admission, conditioning, stem cell infusion, engraftment monitoring, and early recovery.
- Provide structured post-transplant surveillance and long-term follow-up.
- Diagnose and manage graft-versus-host disease and other immune-mediated transplant complications.
- Identify and treat bacterial, viral, fungal, and opportunistic infections associated with immunosuppression and transplantation.
- Manage cytopenias, organ toxicities, graft failure, relapse, and other transplant-related complications.
- Perform bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedures and integrate findings with pathology and molecular diagnostic results.
- Develop chemotherapy protocols for patients with haematological malignancies.
- Prescribe immunotherapy and targeted treatments according to disease characteristics and evidence-based guidelines.
- Monitor treatment response through laboratory investigations, imaging, bone marrow assessment, and disease-specific markers.
- Coordinate complex cancer care with medical oncology, infectious disease, transfusion medicine, pathology, intensive care, pharmacy, nursing, and other specialties.
- Participate actively in multidisciplinary tumour boards and transplant planning meetings.
- Provide clear counselling to patients and families regarding diagnosis, treatment options, transplant risks, expected outcomes, and follow-up requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation of consultations, procedures, treatment plans, transplant progress, complications, and clinical outcomes.
- Supervise junior doctors and support the professional development of clinical staff involved in haematology and transplant services.
- Participate in clinical audits, research, teaching, continuing professional development, and evidence-based protocol review.
- Contribute to service development, clinical governance, patient safety, and continuous improvement of haematology and BMT pathways.
- Maintain compliance with UAE healthcare regulations, institutional policies, and recognized international haematology and transplant standards.
Ideal Profile
- Medical degree from a recognized medical school.
- Recognized postgraduate qualification in Haematology, Haematology and Oncology, or Medical Oncology.
- Valid DHA eligibility, active DHA license, or eligibility to obtain the required UAE healthcare license.
- Established consultant-level experience in haematology and oncology.
- Significant clinical experience in Bone Marrow Transplantation and Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.
- Experience managing both autologous and allogeneic transplantation is highly desirable.
- Strong expertise in acute leukaemia, chronic leukaemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and related haematological malignancies.
- Proven experience with stem cell mobilisation, collection, conditioning, transplantation, and post-transplant care.
- Confident management of graft-versus-host disease, infection, immune suppression, and other transplant complications.
- Strong practical ability in bone marrow aspiration and biopsy.
- Experience designing chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted treatment strategies.
- Familiarity with cellular therapy or CAR-T programs is an additional advantage.
- Ability to work effectively with oncology, pathology, transfusion medicine, infectious disease, critical care, and transplant teams.
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, leadership, and patient-counselling skills.
- Previous involvement in clinical research, teaching, audit, or service development is advantageous.
