Job summary

AtkinsRéalis is looking for an Automation and Control Engineer to design, develop, implement, and maintain PLC/SCADA/DCS systems across infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi. You will coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, and IT/OT teams to deliver safe and efficient control solutions.

The role requires hands-on experience with PLC/SCADA/HMI, control philosophies, and FAT/SAT activities, along with strong problem-solving and communication skills for multi-disciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Instrumentation/Automation Engineering or related field.
• Experience in automation, instrumentation, or control system engineering.
• Strong knowledge of PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI and industrial control systems.
• Experience with Modbus, Profibus/Profinet, Ethernet/IP or OPC.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings and control schematics.

Overview

The Automation and Control Engineer is responsible for the design, development, implementation, testing, and maintenance of automation and control systems across engineering and infrastructure projects. The role focuses on ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of PLC, SCADA, DCS, instrumentation, and associated control systems. The engineer will coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, contractors, and vendors to deliver control solutions in accordance with project requirements, applicable standards, and safety regulations.

Your role

• Design, develop, configure, and implement automation and control systems, including PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI, and associated instrumentation.
• Prepare and review control system architecture, functional design specifications, control philosophies, cause-and-effect matrices, and I/O lists.
• Develop and review PLC/DCS logic, control sequences, interlocks, alarms, and HMI/SCADA configurations.
• Review engineering drawings, including P&IDs, control schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, and instrumentation layouts.
• Support the selection and specification of control system hardware, instrumentation, communication networks, and automation equipment.
• Perform technical reviews of vendor and contractor documentation to ensure compliance with project specifications.
• Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning, and system integration testing.
• Troubleshoot automation, instrumentation, communication, and control system issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Support system upgrades, modifications, optimization, and lifecycle management of automation systems.
• Ensure integration between automation systems and other electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, and communication systems.
• Coordinate with process, electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, IT/OT, and project engineering teams.
• Assist in developing preventive and corrective maintenance strategies for automation and control equipment.
• Ensure compliance with applicable health, safety, quality, cybersecurity, and engineering requirements.
• Maintain accurate technical documentation, configuration records, test reports, and as-built drawings.
• Provide technical support during installation, testing, commissioning, handover, and operational phases.
• Identify opportunities to improve system reliability, operational efficiency, availability, and automation performance.

About you

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Relevant professional experience in automation, instrumentation, or control system engineering.
• Strong knowledge of PLC, SCADA, DCS, HMI, and industrial control systems.
• Experience with industrial communication protocols and networks such as Modbus, Profibus/Profinet, Ethernet/IP, OPC, or similar technologies.
• Good understanding of instrumentation, sensors, actuators, control valves, drives, and field devices.
• Experience in preparing or reviewing control philosophies, I/O schedules, logic diagrams, cause-and-effect matrices, and system architecture.
• Familiarity with FAT, SAT, system integration, troubleshooting, testing, and commissioning activities.
• Understanding of industrial automation safety and OT/control system cybersecurity principles.
• Ability to interpret P&IDs, electrical drawings, control schematics, and technical specifications.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Good communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
• Experience in infrastructure, rail, utilities, water, energy, oil & gas, manufacturing, or industrial projects would be advantageous.
