Youth Programs Coordinator, White Sulphur Springs

Support the Youth Programs Manager in the development, promotion and conduct of youth programs and activities at WSS to draw youth to Jesus Christ and make an impact on the way they live for Him.

Help ensure maximum appropriate utilization of youth programs events and facilities.

Youth Programs Manager, Steele Sessions

Primary Responsibilities:

Support the WSS Center Director and the ministry of the Officers' Christian Fellowship in establishing and maintaining a healthy spiritual climate at WSS that glorifies the Lord and promotes spiritual growth and refreshment for every guest that comes to WSS and every person that works on the staff, whether paid or as a volunteer.

Responsible to disciple subordinates, encouraging and equipping them for growth in their faith in Christ.

Lead staff devotionals and prayers as assigned.

Lead devotionals and prayer with subordinates as appropriate to support their spiritual development and support program goals.

Provide daily supervision of EXSEL Interns (when assigned), Senior Staff, Support Team and any other volunteers or temporary employees that work in Youth Programs.

Responsible for ensuring the quality and timeliness of their work and to ensure they display a hospitable, helpful and professional attitude when interacting with our guests and staff members.

Most importantly, train, counsel, mentor and teach our youth programs staff to be effective camp counselors that are comfortable in not just leading outdoor activities safely (the "hard skills"), but also comfortable in the "soft skills" of listening, encouraging, counseling and praying with their campers as the Lord gives opportunity.

Under the direction of the Youth Programs Manager, responsible to plan, coordinate, train staff, supervise and conduct the outdoor programming that takes place at White Sulphur Springs; i.e. Allegheny Outback!

, Camp Caleb, and Adventure Weekends.

As directed by the Youth Programs Manager, support the development of spiritual / devotional curriculum for all youth programs that ensures our programs provide a safe place for participants to ask questions, grow in their understanding of the Lord, the Bible and deepen their faith.

Help ensure these programs focus on spiritual development and nourishment of kids and families in a military environment, accounting for the unique challenges and circumstances military youth face.

Ultimately, help ensure all activities and spiritual content in our youth programs help meet participants where they are in their Christian faith and move them closer to Jesus Christ.

Assist the Youth Programs Manager in the management and maintenance of the High Ropes and Low Ropes courses.

As directed, develop devotional curriculum / material to support other WSS children's programs during WSS hosted events (i.e. Winter Retreat, Valentine's Retreat, Resurrection Retreat).

Work with the Facility Director to ensure all Youth Programs buildings, facilities, and vehicles are in good condition and working order.

Serve as needed with shared responsibilities at WSS such as : in the dining room with meals, weekly checks of the wastewater treatment plant, and with room changeovers as part of the WSS Ministry Team.

Lead prayer and devotionals at meals as assigned.

Lead morning devotionals with Summer Staff as assigned.

Exercise good financial stewardship of WSS resources by coordinating expenses with the Youth Programs Manager and support tracking of actual expenses vs. budget for Camp Caleb, Allegheny Outback!, and Youth Adventure Weekends as separate programs.

Other duties as assigned by the Youth Programs Manager.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

Prior outdoor adventure leadership / experience is essential.

Knowledge of and experience with White Sulphur Springs Youth Programs (i.e. Camp Caleb and Allegheny Outback!) preferred.

Associates or Bachelors degree not required, but a plus.

Technical proficiency in conducting outdoor adventure activities, to include : running a high ropes course / zip line, rappelling, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and canoeing, hiking and backpacking.

Ability to teach and train others in both a classroom and outdoor environment.

Ability to provide first aid in outdoor / wilderness environments.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs, to include : Outlook, Word, EXSEL, and PowerPoint.

Ability to develop age-appropriate devotional curriculum and materials to support the various youth programs at WSS.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the organization, with interns, part-time staff, full-time staff, guests and volunteers.

Ability to accept responsibility for assigned tasks and complete them on schedule.

Ability to prioritize, manage time, solve problems and handle multiple tasks efficiently with little guidance.

Working Conditions

This position and opportunity should be viewed as a calling to serve and be part of the WSS ministry, not just another job.

This is a full-time, benefit eligible, non-exempt position.

Working hours will be as necessary to accomplish the responsibilities of the ministry.

Normal work hours are (including 1 hour lunch break) on weekdays; work hours vary on weekends and throughout the Summer and Winter seasons but are typically 9 hours / day.

However, longer hours are sometimes necessary to support ministry requirements.

Primary work location

an office is provided in Heritage House.

However, extensive time working outdoors is normal.

This position requires a good level of physical fitness and stamina, and "leading from the front."

Must be capable of teaching, training and participating in all outdoor activities that are part of our programs, including : camping, hiking, backpacking, rappelling, rock climbing, use of the WSS high and low ropes courses and whitewater canoeing and rafting.

Must be comfortable participating in all these types of activities, training staff to safely conduct them, and encouraging guests / campers to overcome fears and participate in these adventure activities.

This position requires living at White Sulphur Springs.

Housing on White Sulphur Springs property is provided as part of overall compensation and benefits package.

Day off

Monday under normal conditions and either Sunday or Tuesday as the weekend duty rotation schedule allows.

Days off during the Summer and Winter seasons will be determined by the duty schedule developed for each of those seasons but is normally 1 day off per week during these peak seasons, with compensatory time given as it is earned.

Available to start late Spring or early Summer and the ability to work for ministry-level compensation.

Reasonable expectation that the applicant can and will serve for 3-5 years.
