Assistant Sommelier Role Overview

The Assistant Sommelier role is a dynamic position that involves suggesting suitable wines to pair with menu dishes, taking into account guests' tastes and preferences, as well as complementing their food.

This role requires a strong passion for wine, combined with exceptional guest service skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Train restaurant staff on wine knowledge and service standards, ensuring they are equipped to provide top‑note service.
  • Maintain the presentation and temperature of all drinks, guaranteeing an exceptional dining experience for our guests.
  • Update the wine list regularly to reflect current offerings, keeping it fresh and exciting for our customers.
  • Place orders for all wines and beverages, selecting high‑quality products that meet our standards.
  • Meet with suppliers to source new and exciting wines, building relationships and staying up‑to‑date with industry trends.
  • Ensure the wine service area is set up and ready for service, creating a welcoming environment for our guests.
  • Manage inventory levels and equipment maintenance, minimizing losses through breakage, waste, theft, and incorrect orders.
  • Conduct regular temperature checks to ensure optimal storage conditions, maintaining the quality of our wines.
  • Keep decanters clean and well‑maintained, presenting our wines in the best possible light.
Requirements and Qualifications
  • Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, demonstrating a strong foundation in education.
  • Wine certification from Cape Wine Academy or WSET level 1, showcasing expertise in wine knowledge.
  • 1‑2 years of wine tutoring experience (preferable), providing hands‑on training and guidance.
  • In‑depth knowledge of wines, including grape varieties, regions, harvest times, climates, soils, and wine‑making processes.
  • Ability to communicate complex wine knowledge to guests, making it accessible and enjoyable.
