Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing – Systems Engineer (Cape Town)

Two Oceans Marine Manufacturing was founded in 1989 and is a leading global manufacturer of custom and semi-custom power and sailing catamarans. The company is based in the Port of Cape Town. Job Profile: Reporting to the Lead Designer of the Project, the Systems Engineer will be designing and detailing all systems (Mechanical and Electrical) for new products.

Duties and Responsibilities – Engineering and Design

  • Design all systems and system components to meet the manufacturer9s guidelines, functional requirements and certification standards, ensuring suitability for manufacture and serviceability within cost parameters.
  • Create CAD Models (2D & 3D) and complete calculations for the design, specification of systems components and equipment for new product design or engineering change requests.
  • Complete costing analyses and material forecasts for prototype development.
  • Research new parts or materials to evaluate viability for new product development or ECR projects, including cost comparisons to existing equivalents and providing materials forecasts to the logistics department for long-lead-time items.
  • Prepare and ensure the BOM specification is accurate and updated.
  • Perform critical quality checks during new part prototyping or ECR implementation on moulds, parts and installations related to allocated drawings.
  • Understand all system-related designs, including: Engine Installations, Steering Installations, Gas Installations, Electrical/Digital switching Installation, Electronic Installation.

Supporting Functions

  • Support the Logistics & Stores Departments with BOM queries, workstation allocation, part usage explanations, and addressing potential shortfalls or obsolescence risks.
  • Support Warranty with technical feedback on claims.
  • Support Commissioning by answering technical or BOM queries and performing quality checks during new product implementations or engineering changes.
  • Support Technical Purchasing with technical queries.
  • Support Project Management by providing status updates for new projects, including drawings, CNC files, BOM packs and quality checks.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Ideal: BTech/B-degree (NQF Level 7) Engineering or related field.
  • Understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.
  • Proven experience in the marine electronics industry.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and certification requirements.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and basic knowledge of Catia/Solidworks/Rhino.
  • Good knowledge of MS Office Programs.
  • Self-disciplined to research and investigate new technologies and a passion for yachting.
  • Good problem solving, analytical and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational/communication skills.
  • Ability to read and draft electrical and mechanical drawings and schematics.
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, mechanical, electronic, air-conditioning and ventilation systems (marine/boat industry preferred).

New Design Implementation and Support

  • Understand new design/project scope and identify process improvements and implementation means.
  • Discuss new design/project with design and manufacturing support functions.
  • Bill of Material support and allocation sequencing.
  • Identify risks related to safety, time and quality and implement action plans for prototypes.
  • Support build progression and provide feedback to design and project management on changes.
  • Set up deliverables and action lists for design roll-out to production lines and provide guidance to manufacturing.

Requirements

  • Proven track record in the Boat Building industry (5+ years).
  • Good verbal and written communication; effective business writing.
  • Problem solving, leadership, and advanced Microsoft applications (especially Excel).
  • Expert knowledge of boat building activities and cross-functional interfaces (engineering, procurement, estimating, cost management, construction, safety, quality, finance, document control).
