Job summary

SKA South Africa is seeking an Enrolled Nurse to support occupational health services for SARAO staff and contractors in the Northern Cape. You will assist with medicals, maintain confidential health records and support emergency and wellness activities.

The role requires SANC registration, 4 years nursing experience (1 in occupational health), and a current practice certificate. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment with strong emphasis on safety and documentation.

Qualifications

• Must be registered as an Enrolled Nurse with SANC (2-year qualification).
• 4 years post-qualification nursing experience, with at least 1 year in occupational health or primary care.
• Current annual practice certificate and active indemnity insurance.

Responsibilities

• Assist Occupational Health practitioner with medical examinations (entry, pre-employment, routine).
• Maintain health documents and confidential records in central system.
• Report on health and safety matters and coordinate with IOD/claims teams.
• Maintain clinic documentation, registers and patient records.
• Assist doctors’ appointments and prep.
• Manage and stock medical equipment and supplies.
• Contribute to incident investigations and lessons learned.
• Ensure medical equipment is clean, calibrated and stored correctly.
• Monitor medications and stock in refrigerators.

The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) implements South Africa’s strategic investments in radio astronomy, including the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, which covers a broad range of engineering and scientific activities. SARAO is a National Facility of the National Research Foundation, and incorporates radio astronomy and space geodesy instruments and programmes such as the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, the Hartebeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) in Gauteng, the Africa Radio Astronomy Programme across nine African countries, as well as associated human capital development and commercialisation endeavours.

SARAO seeks to appoint an Enrolled Nurse, this position will provide medical assistance and support to all staff and assist the Occupational Health Practitioner with the implementation of the day‑to‑day health requirements for SARAO and contractors in the Northern Cape.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist Occupational Health practitioner with conducting medical examination, such as entry/pre‑employment/preplacement medicals, routine/periodic medicals, voluntary surveillance and fitness for work check‑ups etc.
• Maintenance of health documents records on KEY 360, Incon performer and at people and culture as a central point for all employee health confidential records.
• Report on HSE matters and coordinate with the IOD claims administrator and SHEQ officers to address IODs and submission in terms of COIDA.
• Maintain, implement and improve clinic documentation, including registers, and patient records.
• Assist in preparation for doctors’ appointments
• On a regular basis , assist Occupational Health practitioners in maintaining and controlling of medical equipment and stock.
• Assist and participate in incident investigation and provide lessons learnt.
• Ensure medical equipment is cleaned, maintained and calibrated as per requirements.
• Inspect and monitor medication stored in the refrigerator and monitor stock levels.
• Assists with queries regarding continuous / ongoing / excessive health and personal related absenteeism,
• Respond to site emergencies and trauma calls and assist on online medical care.
• Assist wellness programme coordinator and promote physical, emotional, and mental well-being amongst employees.
• Assist and support emergency medical teams (ER 24) in pre‑hospital care situations and inform management.
• Assist with First aid management, including, liaising with first aiders and the regular maintenance of first aid boxes across sites.
• Participate and contribute to internal and external meetings, workshops, and be a co‑opted member of the SARAO SHEQ committee.

Key Requirements:

Qualification:

• Matric and Enrolled nurse qualification: 2‑year qualification allowing for registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an enrolled nurse (Compulsory)
• 4 years post qualification experience in nursing as an enrolled nurse of which one year should be within a specialised area, e.g. Occupational Health or Primary Healthcare facility.
• Current registration with the SANC as an Enrolled Nurse with a valid annual practice certificate (Compulsory)
• Proof of active indemnity insurance (Compulsory)
• Driver’s License (Compulsory)
• Certificate in Audiometry and registration with SASOHN as an audiometrist (Advantageous)
• Certificate in Occupational Vision Screening and Spirometry (Advantageous)
• Certificate in Basic Life Support, or, Intermediate or Advanced Life Support (Advantageous)

Experience:

• Experience in working on complex and multidisciplinary projects.
• Understanding of health legislation framework in South Africa e.g. National Health Act 61 of 2003, Nursing Act 33 of 2005, Medicine and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 etc.
• Understanding of occupational health and safety legislation in South Africa e.g, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Compensation for Occupational Diseases and Injuries Act 130 of 1993 etc.

Knowledge:

• Knowledge and understanding of generally, accepted healthcare practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of Primary Health Care.
• Occupational Health screening procedures.
• Relevant nursing policies, procedures and legislation.

Additional Notes:

• Good communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
• Computer literate on MS Word, MS Excel, Power point etc.
• Able to review and monitor multidisciplinary tasks.
