A leading manufacturing company in Springs, Gauteng is seeking an experienced Utilities Manager to oversee the operation of utilities systems critical for paper production. Responsibilities include managing daily operations, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, and leading a team. Candidates should have a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree and significant experience in industrial utilities, including leadership roles. This position offers a competitive salary range from R150,000 to R250,000.

Qualifications

• 10 years' experience in Industrial Utilities.
• 3 years' leadership experience.
• GCC factory certification is advantageous.
• Experience with 20t package boilers is a plus.

Job Description

SITE : ENSTRA MILL (SPRINGS)

DIVISION : ENSTRA PAPER

REPORTING TO : ENGINEERING MANAGER

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To ensure the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of all utilities systems (steam, water, effluent, compressed air, fire systems) required to support paper production. To drive statutory compliance, efficiency improvement, and availability of all utility services

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

OPERATIONS AND RELIABILITY

• Manages daily operations of boilers, steam systems, water treatment, effluent treatment, and compressed air systems.
• Ensures consistent utility supply to production areas within agreed parameters (pressure, flow, quality).
• Oversees energy, water, and chemical consumption, identifying and implementing optimisation opportunities
• Leads and develops multidisciplinary team of artisans, technicians and operators
• Maintains a training matrix to ensure competency in boiler operation, effluent management and chemical handling.

COMPLIANCE AND SAFETY

• Ensures full compliance with OHSA, SANS, boiler regulations, environmental permits (water discharge, emissions), and insurance requirements.
• Maintains statutory inspection schedules for boilers, pressure vessels, and fire protection systems.
• Enforces safety procedures: LOTO, confined space, hot work, chemical handling.
• Fosters a culture of safety, reliability and continuous improvement.

MAINTENANCE AND RELIABILITY

• Leads preventive and predictive maintenance programs for utility assets.
• Coordinates with Reliability Engineer and Maintenance Planners to optimise PM intervals and reduce downtime.
• Manages spares, obsolescence, and contractor services for utility equipment.

PROJECTS AND CONTINOUS IMPROVEMENT

• Supports CAPEX projects related to utilities (new boiler installations, effluent upgrades, energy efficiency).
• Drives sustainability initiatives (reduced water/steam consumption, condensate recovery, heat recovery, emissions reduction).
• Conducts root cause analysis for recurring utility failures

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

• A Bachelor degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or related field at NQF Level 7.
• Ten (10) years' experience in Industrial Utilities
• Three (3) years' leadership experience.
• GCC factory certification is advantageous.
• Experience in running and maintaining 20t package boilers will be an advantage
