Job Description

We’re looking for a sharp, detail-obsessed Underwriter who thrives on turning complex information into confident decisions.   • Facultative Reinsurance & Special Acceptances:
    • Evaluate and decide on referrals that fall outside the UMA mandate.
    • Arrange facultative reinsurance or special acceptances for risks above treaty limits.
    • Ensure that all placements align with company underwriting guidelines.
  • Reinsurance Renewals:
    • Compile and circulate renewal packs in partnership with UMAs and internal stakeholders.
    • Gather, review, and present accurate data to treaty reinsurers.
    • Negotiate renewal terms and secure treaty support for all UMAs.
    • Oversee the smooth completion of all administrative processes linked to renewals.
  • Stakeholder & Treaty Management:
    • Build and sustain strong working relationships with treaty and facultative reinsurers.
    • Collaborate with UMAs and internal business partners to align strategies and support underwriting needs.

Job Experience & Skills Required:

  • A Degree in Insurance, Risk Management, BCom related Degree, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, BSc Engineering, or BCom Law/LLB.
  • 2-4 years underwriting experience in short-term insurance.
  • Strong product, policy, and compliance knowledge.
  • Experience in a reinsurance environment will be a strong advantage.
  • Ability to critically review and assess your own work with attention to detail.
  • Confident with MS Outlook, Word, and Excel at an intermediate level.
  • Power BI skills would be a great bonus!

Role Purpose

To assess new business applications and provide accurate underwriting decisions in line with the Scheme's underwriting guidelines.

Requirements

Grade 12/Matric.

1-2 years underwriting experience.

Health underwriting experience an advantage.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Making accurate individual underwriting decisions for new applicants and additional dependents applying to join Momentum Medical Scheme by applying:
  • The Medical Schemes Act (legislation);
  • The Momentum Medical Scheme underwriting policy;
  • Standards, protocols and guidelines set.

Liaising with brokers, applicants, members and doctors where applicable with regards to underwriting decisions made either telephonically, in writing or in person as required.

Effectively resolving any queries received and identifying trends and training gaps.

Driving and supporting effective departmental team work.

Additional Information:

Maintain a broad product, legislation and standards/protocols knowledge in order to effectively and accurately perform the role of an underwriter.

Adhere to organisational best practice and legislative requirements.

Identify risks to the company and escalate accordingly.
