Arup seeks a Transmission Civil & Structural Lead Engineer in South Africa to drive design and delivery of EHV/HV substations up to 765kV. Based in Johannesburg or Cape Town, you will lead multi‑disciplinary teams and liaise with clients to deliver resilient energy infrastructure.

The role requires a BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering, ECSA registration or progress toward it, and strong hands‑on experience with civil and structural software.

Arup’s Energy Transmission team in South Africa provides specialist civil and structural engineering advice and services across transmission projects up to 765kV. Based in Johannesburg or Cape Town, the team works with internal and external clients across energy, rail, nuclear, buildings and utilities, supporting projects in areas such as Solar PV, onshore and offshore wind, interconnectors, utilities, nuclear, data centres and industrial facilities.

Due to significant growth across Arup’s local and global Energy portfolio, we have opportunities for Civil and Structural Engineers to join our Energy Transmission team in Johannesburg or Cape Town. In this role, you will contribute to the design and delivery of extra high voltage and high voltage substation projects, working across transmission systems up to 765kV and supporting clients in sectors including renewable energy, utilities, nuclear, data centres and industrial facilities.

You will work both within multidisciplinary teams and independently, taking responsibility for technical delivery, project coordination and client-facing project tasks. This is a long‑term opportunity to grow your expertise in transmission infrastructure, apply hands‑on design software knowledge and help deliver resilient, sustainable energy solutions for communities and clients.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for someone who:

• Holds a BSc or BEng in Civil Engineering or a similar relevant qualification.
• Is professionally registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), or is working towards professional registration.
• Has civil and structural experience in the design and delivery of EHV and HV substations, ideally across 765kV to 132kV transmission projects.
• Can lead technical project tasks, support client and project management activities, and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Has hands‑on knowledge of relevant civil and structural design software and a practical approach to delivering high‑quality engineering outcomes.
