Job Opportunity: Site Manager for a Total Refractory Management (TRM) Contract

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa

About You

You are a refractory and steel‑making specialist with deep industry expertise and proven success in the application of refractory products, ideally within aggregates from the steel sector. Your strong cooperation and communication skills allow you to act as a trusted interface between RHI Magnesita and its customers. As a Refractory Contract Manager, you will collaborate closely with Technical Excellence, Supply Chain, Services, and Machinery departments, all working toward the common goal of ensuring customer satisfaction and long‑term loyalty.

Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or materials engineering.
  • And / or a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in refractory application within the steel sector.
  • At least 5 years of experience with steel‑making units: EAF, Ladle Furnace, and Caster.
  • Excellent MS Office and PowerPoint skills.
  • Fluent written and spoken English.
  • Strong leadership capabilities with high social competence and confident presence.
  • Distinctive problem‑solving skills and strong customer orientation.
Purpose of the Role

The Refractory Contract Manager provides leadership to the on‑site RHIM team, ensuring the successful execution of supply and maintenance contracts while developing future opportunities. Key objectives include:

  • Achieving refractory sales turnover and profitability targets.
  • Maintaining high‑quality installation services.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety, health, and environmental standards.
  • Building and nurturing customer relationships while promoting RHIM products and services.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage business set‑up on site.
  • Conduct daily meetings with the customer.
  • Oversee material ordering, warehousing, and distribution to installation points.
  • Perform quality checks on refractory installations and mechanical parts.
  • Monitor steel‑making operating parameters and their impact on refractory performance.
  • Supervise wrecking and collection of used materials.
  • Ensure maintenance of installation equipment.
  • Prepare monthly technical reports and invoicing information.
  • Identify and manage subcontractors.
  • Handle equipment/asset management and procurement.
  • Maintain refractory material trial registers and reporting systems.
  • Collaborate regularly with customers to meet their requirements.
  • Register and resolve customer complaints with support from technical and services teams.
  • Promote RHI Magnesita’s image and products.
  • Report and act on non‑conforming services or products.
  • Record and report daily and monthly refractory performance and costs.
