A global sustainability organization is seeking a Technical Advisor in Pretoria to shape South Africa's green hydrogen future. You will manage activities ensuring large-scale renewable projects are environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. This role requires a Master’s degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience, particularly in sustainability and environmental science.
Shape South Africa's green hydrogen and sustainability future as a Technical Advisor focusing on Environment and Sustainability, reporting to the Component Leader – H2.SA II / BVC, based in Hatfield, Pretoria, with the role secured until 31 December.
South Africa is uniquely positioned to become a global leader in the green hydrogen (GH2) economy and its derivatives (Power-to-X, PtX). With abundant renewable resources and well‑established industrial infrastructure, the country can accelerate decarbonisation, attract major international investment and build new industries that deliver a just and inclusive transition. The country is also central to the global supply of critical raw materials (CRM) such as platinum, manganese, vanadium, chromium and nickel – vital for clean technologies, batteries and digitalisation. Combined with its skilled workforce and established mining sector, South Africa can build a competitive CRM and battery value chain, strengthening both domestic industry and regional leadership. Yet challenges remain: policy uncertainty, limited capacity, coordination gaps and the insufficient integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards.
On behalf of the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and in close cooperation with the South African government, GIZ is implementing the H2.SA II / BVC Programme to support the development of dynamic green hydrogen and CRM value chains. The programme includes five components: Strategy, policy & regulatory framework; Private sector cooperation; Capacity building, research & innovation; Sustainability & just transition; Battery value chains. This role sits within Component 4 – Sustainability and Just Transition, focusing on the environmental and social dimensions of a hydrogen‑based economy.
You will help ensure that large‑scale renewable projects are developed responsibly, socially inclusive and widely accepted – laying the foundation for a sustainable energy future.
Contribute to South Africa’s just energy transition at the intersection of environment, economy and society. Be part of an international organisation recognised for diversity, respect and equal opportunities. Work in a global network that values inclusion and gender equality. Benefit from a supportive work environment committed to professional growth and impact.
