Job Description

Position: Teacher Assistant (Paraprofessional)

Location: Northwoods Fine Arts Academy, East Old North Road, Sand Springs, Oklahoma

Reports to: Assigned Teacher or Building Principal

Status: Nonexempt

Evaluation: Annually

Qualifications:

48 Hours College Credit OR Passing Score on Paraprofessional Test, High School Diploma or Equivalent

Completion of Paraprofessional Training required by the OSDE CPI Certificate CPR and First Aid Certificate.

Obtain a Tiered Certification Certificate as specified by the OSDE.

Pass the National Criminal History Check qualifications with the OSDE / OSBI.

Have a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) diploma.

Options:
  • Option A: Hold an associate's degree (or higher)
  • Option B: Complete at least two years (48 credit hours) of study at an institution of higher education
  • Option D: Pass a Parapro or WorkKeys Assessment

Pass an Oklahoma Criminal Background Check.

Application for Oklahoma Title I Paraprofessional Credential:

$10 processing fee (check, cashier's check, or money order) made payable to the Oklahoma State Department of Education (required if hired for this position).

Regular Requirements:
  • Stand for extended periods; walk.
  • Twist at the neck and trunk; bend and reach with hands and arms overhead, above the shoulder, and horizontally.
  • Repetitive use of fingers and hands to grasp and/or operate equipment and demonstrate lessons to students.
  • Lift/move up to 75 pounds.

Close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Adequate to exchange information.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Note – these duties vary based on the student’s needs and individualized education plans.

Typical duties may include:
  • Monitors students on district-provided transportation and assists students in getting on or off buses and vans.
  • Accompanies students during meals and assists students with getting and eating meals and cleaning up after meals.
  • Accompanies students to classes or therapy services, monitors behavior (intervening as needed), and assists with classwork.
  • Assists students with motor, balance, social, and life skills.
  • Possibly assists students with personal care, including dressing, toileting, and diapering.
  • Cleans and maintains an efficient work area.
  • Assists with instruction, errands, and copies related to the assigned student(s).
  • Attends IEP and other meetings and training as requested.
  • Alerts the assigned teacher of concerns related to the student.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student information.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and local board policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes professional behavior in all school‑related interactions.
  • Assists the teacher in monitoring students’ progress toward academic and behavioral IEP goals.
  • Reinforces learning in small groups or with an individual student while the teacher works with other students.
  • Assists the teacher in observing, recording, and charting behavior.
  • Assists the teacher with crisis problems and behavior management.
  • Provides one‑on‑one tutoring if scheduled when a student would not otherwise receive instruction from a teacher.
  • Scores objective tests and papers and maintains appropriate records for teachers.
  • Carries out instructional programs designed by the teacher.
  • Works with the teacher to develop classroom schedules.
  • Operates and maintains classroom equipment.
  • Takes over a class for a short period.
  • Supervises children in the hallway, lunchroom, and playground.
  • Assists students with toileting needs or changing.
  • Implement and enforce behavior intervention plans for individual students.
  • Performs all other tasks as the supervisor may assign.
