Main Job Purpose

The primary role of a TCS Field Installation Technician is to prepare installation sites, physically install toll system equipment, and carry out configuration, calibration, and testing of the equipment. The role is also responsible for troubleshooting any problems that arise during the installation process and providing support to the operator throughout the installation process. Following performance verification and commissioning, they are also responsible for implementing handover procedures and/or maintenance processes.

Primary Focus
  • Procurement – Occasionally the technician may need to participate in procurement activities, working closely with suppliers and clients.
  • Installations – The technician is responsible for the physical installation of toll‑related equipment, following established procedures and specifications. This includes tasks such as cabling, assembling devices, and operating construction equipment when necessary. Working at heights may also be required.
  • Testing and troubleshooting – The technician ensures the quality and functionality of cable connections and systems, performing thorough checks to confirm durability and proper operation. Troubleshooting is carried out using specialized tools to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Maintenance and repair – The technician may be required to train maintenance technicians or, as a resident technician, perform system maintenance when needed.
  • Customer interaction – The technician will engage with clients to provide training, operational guidance, and respond to inquiries as necessary.
Health and Safety

The role requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and specialized safety gear. A solid understanding of the Health and Safety Act is essential, and the technician must adhere to safety protocols at all times, ensuring their own safety as well as that of colleagues and bystanders.

Documentation

Accurate documentation of installations, processes, and procedures is required for handover, record‑keeping, and tracking installed equipment, which includes completing forms, logs, and other necessary records.

Educational Requirement
  • Grade 12
  • Electronic / Electrical Engineering qualification OR similar tertiary qualification
  • Valid Unendorsed Code 08 Drivers License
  • At least 5 years related experience and good knowledge of the Health and Safety Act.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The technician must be in physically sound condition to allow for lifting and moving of toll equipment and spares, physical labour, working in confined spaces, working at heights, must be able to drive a motor vehicle, work long hours (overtime) occasionally and be able to work inside/outside. Perform installations worldwide.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

AVC – Cut road surface where applicable and install Treadles and loops, seal road surface where applicable, install sensor or infrared equipment, install and fit AVC enclosure, install battery charger and UPS, install and terminate all cables in enclosure where applicable, test all AVC pads to ensure correct triggering and sequencing.

Receipt Printer – Install receipt printer and cables to lane controller; terminate cables on both sides by means of connectors; print a receipt to ensure quality and functionality.

Swipe Card Reader – Install swipe card reader and cables to lane controller; terminate cables on both sides by means of connectors; test the SCR with a test card.

Traffic Light – Install traffic light in right passion, brackets or pole; install cables and terminate both sides; log to lane and ensure functionality.

Patron Fare Display – Install Fare Display in correct position; install cables and connect both sides; ensure it works.

CCTV Cameras – Assist contractor with installation of brackets and conduits.

OHLS – Install OHLS in correct position; install cables and terminate correctly; ensure working after installation.

Entrance / Exit Booms – Install booms, ensure secure; cables terminate; boom safety; tensioning adjustment; activate loop and confirm closure.

TCT – Install TCT on work surface; install cables; terminate; ensure working.

Lane Controller Unit – Install lane controller, fix in predetermined position; terminate cables; ensure door switch, keys, locks; mark unit with lane number.

Intercom System – Install intercom, install cables; terminate; install slave units at determined positions.

Electrical Cabling – Install and terminate electrical cables on toll equipment; install UPS and battery backup; ensure proper cabling; coordinate with reticulation; follow diagrams; mark and label cables.

Administration and General Safety – Work from a structured plan; stick to timelines; correspond with installation manager and project manager; work safely; keep safety of colleagues.

Tools and Test Equipment – Clean all test equipment; ensure all is functional; ensure all tools and equipment available before installation.
