Job summary

Boardroom Appointments is seeking an experienced SQL Database Administrator in Cape Town to manage MS SQL Server databases and drive performance optimisations. You will join a central DBA team and collaborate with development squads to ensure high availability and efficient data pipelines.

The role requires deep SQL expertise, strong communication with stakeholders, and the ability to prioritise under pressure. Experience with Azure data services is a plus and the team embraces automation.

Qualifications

• MS SQL Server DBA experience required.
• Strong T-SQL optimisation and query tuning skills.
• Experience with high-transaction databases and performance monitoring.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement, including with C-level.
• Problem-solving mindset and ability to prioritise in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Interface with central DBA team and assigned dev squad.
• Perform backups, AG maintenance, upgrades, connectivity and infrastructure management.
• Lead pre-emptive T-SQL optimisation and monitor high-consuming queries.
• Manage partitioning and database size.
• Review T-SQL code and support developers with data design.
• Develop and maintain archiving strategies and data pipelines using T-SQL and/or Azure Data Factory.
• Automate code and infrastructure using PowerShell, Terraform and Azure DevOps.
• Migrate to and create managed services like Azure SQL Database/Managed Instances.
• Participate in an on-call support roster.

About the job SQL Database Administrator

• Experience as a MS SQL Server database administrator.
• Expertise with performance Tuning and T-SQL Optimisation.
• Experience with busy databases handling large volumes of transactions per day.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a broad range of stakeholders up to C-level
• A natural problem solver with excellent organisation and prioritisation skills
• Experience of decision making in a pressurised environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• University degree or equivalent from a knowledge & experience perspective

Nice to have:

• Experience in Microsoft Azure would be considered a strong asset
• Experience with any of the following considered an asset; Azure SQL, Azure Data Factory, MongoDB, MySQL, Terraform, Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage

Responsibilities:

• Working within a central DBA team whilst interfacing with an assigned dev squad
• Traditional MS SQL Server administration tasks such as backups, availability group maintenance, version upgrades, connectivity issues, infrastructure management etc
• Pre-emptive T-SQL optimisation, identification and tuning of high consuming queries achieved through in-depth query performance monitoring
• Partitioning and database size management
• T-SQL code review for an assigned dev squad as well as supporting developers with efficient database design
• Developing and maintaining archiving strategies, data extraction and data insertion pipelines using T-SQL and/or Azure Data Factory
• Code and infrastructure automation using tools such as PowerShell, Terraform and Azure DevOps
• Migrating to and creating managed database services such as Azure SQL Database and Azure SQL Managed Instances
• Participating in an on-call support roster
