Job summary

A governmental health department in Johannesburg is seeking a Speech Therapist to manage speech, language, and communication challenges in paediatric and adult patients. Requirements
  • An appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the HPCSA as Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy & Audiology. Independent practice registration with HPCSA for the current year for 2025/2026. No experience required after completion of Community Service. Knowledge of the acute care setting, exposure with Neonatal, paediatric and adult dysphagia, exposure with patients with neurological conditions (congenital and acquired) and tracheostomy management will be an added advantage. Competencies: Knowledge and skills in the assessment and intervention of speech, language, communication and dysphagia. Knowledge and skills in early childhood intervention within a family focused approach. Experience with teamwork, planning, organizing and coordination of clinical and non-clinical roles. Good communication and collaboration skills. Ability to engage in solution-based problem solving. Display empathy for patients, promote advocacy and facilitate holistic treatment. Applicants should be prepared to undergo medical surveillance as an inherent job requirement. Community service speech therapist completing their contracts on or before 31 December 2025 are encouraged to apply.
Duties
  • To screen, assess and manage speech, language, communication and feeding difficulties in both the neonatal, paediatric and adult populations in an inpatient and outpatient setting. To work with patients and their families in facilitating positive outcomes. To comply with all departmental procedures and protocols. To coordinate clinical and non-clinical areas. To manage all resources appropriately. To complete monthly statistics and reports. To participate in all departmental, hospital and provincial activities. To work within an MDT approach including attendance and participation in MDT meetings. To improve professional competence by regular self-learning and reflection with the application of current evidence. To attend and participate in scheduled case discussions and meetings. To comply with hospital and departmental quality assurance standards. Maintain professional growth/ethical standards. Management of personal performance and review thereof. Supervision of students and community service therapists.
