South Africa Videojournalist (Videojournalist

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiasednews in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented visual journalist with a history of successful television and online video storytelling to join its team in South Africa as a videojournalist. In this role, you’ll use video, graphics and editing techniques to deliver visually engaging journalism as part of a dynamic, round-the-clock operation that covers Southern Africa.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the senior producer for Southern Africa, you will primarily shoot, write and edit video – including LIVE video – stories from South Africa for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. In this role, you will also pitch, develop and research enterprise stories. You may contribute reporting in other media formats, including text, photos and audio, to help produce a competitive and comprehensive all-formats news repor t. You must be prepared to travel extensively, including outside of South Africa – often at short notice and in hostile environments – to cover breaking news.

Preferred Qualifications : You have a demonstrated history of success as a videojournalist, with a record of creating compelling visual journalism on deadline, as well as visual enterprise that is illuminating and entertaining. You must also have advanced technical skills in video content creation. You are creative, innovative and agile, and you work effectively in deadline-driven, dynamic newsroom and field environments, on breaking news and on short- and long-term projects. You can work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.

We’re looking for someone who has a great news sense and the ability to drive stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms. You’re eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity. You have a track record of success on complex, challenging storylines. As an AP journalist, you must be able to and willing to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as five years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • All applicants must be able to work in South Africa or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in other regional languages is a plus.
  • Advanced skills in professional video shooting and non-linear editing.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and work effectively as a member of a team.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Application deadline is November 24, at 11:59PM ET.
