Job summary

A healthcare recruitment agency is seeking a qualified Sonographer to conduct 2D and 3D ultrasounds, assess fetal development, and provide findings for research data collection. The position is located at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto, South Africa. The ideal candidate will have experience in ultrasound technology, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. This is a 6-month fixed term contract position.

Qualifications

  • Must be registered in Ultrasonography with the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA).
  • At least 2 - 3 years experience working as a Sonographer.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high-quality fetal ultrasound scans following clinical protocols.
  • Assess fetal development anatomy and detect abnormalities.
  • Ensure correct positioning of the patient for optimal imaging.
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound machines to optimize image quality.
  • Provide preliminary findings to the study leads and complete referrals where relevant.

Job description
Background
  • A collaboration of Wits Faculty of Health Sciences specialists epidemiologists molecular biologists and the National Cancer Registry has formed the NCDRD
  • South Africa burdened with HIV and TB is now facing a rapidly increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases - obesity hypertension diabetes cardiovascular disease cancer and depression
  • Unfortunately just as SA is bringing the HIV epidemic under control with an expanded ART programme and the life expectancy of citizens increasing the burden of common cancers such as breast prostate lung and colorectal cancers is increasing
  • The Non-Communicable Diseases Research Division (NCDRD) aims to meet the challenges presented by non-communicable diseases
  • The NCDRD has established several hospital and community cohort studies and molecular genetic biomarker projects
  • A key focus is on co-morbidities and health system strengthening by addressing barriers to early-stage patient presentation diagnosis and optimum management of patients
  • South Africa is facing growing prevalences of cancer diabetes heart disease and depression
  • We need an integrated approach of different clinical specialists with scientists to find ways to not only improve the screening and treatment of thesis conditions but also to prevent such diseases

  • The NCDRD is a multidisciplinary research division within the Wits Health Consortium a wholly owned clinical research company of Wits University that fosters academic entrepreneurial research
Main Purpose of the Job
  • Experience of conducting 2D and 3D ultrasound with doppler where relevant in adults and children including ultrasound of the heart carotid kidneys and conducting fetal ultrasound during pregnancy including assessment of uterine and umbilical artery blood flow

Key Performance Areas
  • Perform high-quality fetal ultrasound scans following clinical protocols
  • Assess fetal development anatomy and detect abnormalities
  • Ensure correct positioning of the patient for optimal imaging
  • Operate and adjust ultrasound machines to optimize image quality
  • Perform routine maintenance and report equipment issues
  • Stay updated on the latest ultrasound technology and techniques
  • Capture and analyze high-quality images for research data collection and screening purposes
  • Provide preliminary findings to the study leads and complete referrals where relevant
  • Accurately document scan results on REDCAP
  • Follow professional guidelines infection control and radiation safety standards
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in on-going training and development activities such as workshops forums conferences etc
  • Apply knowledge of the organisational systems structures policies and procedures to achieve results
  • Provide appropriate resolution for tasks or deadlines not met
  • Support and drive the organisations core values
  • Experience of conducting 2D and 3D ultrasound with doppler where relevant in adults and children including ultrasound of the heart carotid kidneys and conducting fetal ultrasound during pregnancy including assessment of uterine and umbilical artery blood flow
  • Must be able to interpret images and generate reports capturing data and images into an electronic data capture system
  • Must be able to conduct all ultrasound assessments including doppler measures and be willing to train and supervise junior sonography trainees including implementing quality control and quality assurance measures for all imaging conducted
  • Confidentiality tact and discretion must be maintained at all times
  • Ability to manage self and prioritise own work load
  • Self-motivated able to work independently and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent organisational communication and problem solving skills
  • Able to support the research team to deliver the project goals on time and on budget
  • Ability to work independently to deliver on projects operational goals and objectives
  • Teaching and supervision experience would be desirable
Required Minimum Education and Training
  • Grade 12
  • Trained and Registered sonographer
  • Good Clinical Practice Certificate
  • Driverss license and able to drive a manual vehicle
Professional Body Registration
  • Must be registered in Ultrasonography with the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA)
Required Minimum Work Experience
  • At least 2 - 3 years experience working as a Sonographer
