Job description

Location: St Helena Island, South Atlantic

Contract: 2 years FTC, available immediately

Salary: £70k pa, depending on experience and qualifications, plus International Supplement

A principal legal adviser to the Governments of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha, you will play a leading role in managing the Attorney General’s Chambers, offering appropriate legal advice across the full range of legal areas.

You will have overall charge of Crown Proceedings and manage the legislative programme with the Attorney General and the Legislative Commissioner. You must act as advocate in court proceedings, as Crown Prosecutor and/or as instructing lawyer and manage the drafting and execution of all contracts and agreements and other legal instruments.

You will develop the Attorney General’s Chambers to reflect the changing needs of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha and ensure that the Governor, Chief Minister, Ministers, Administrators and relevant officials have access to professional advice on legal matters. You will identify and advise on priorities, challenges, risks and strategies for improvement across all aspects of legislation and other legal matters. When authorised you will be Acting Attorney General; serving as a non‑voting member of Executive and Legislative Councils.

Qualifications
  • Qualified as a solicitor or barrister in England and Wales (or equivalent in another common law jurisdiction) with a current practising certificate.
  • Substantial post‑qualification experience that includes public and private law, commercial and contract matters, extensive drafting experience, with civil and criminal litigation.
  • Fluent, competent and persuasive advocacy and written work.
  • Strong inspiring leadership, experience managing senior teams while controlling budgets, resources and funding.
  • Analytical skills to develop solutions or solve problems and manage organisational experts outside one’s own professional area.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting legislation and providing legal advice to Government.
  • Commitment to fairness, integrity and teamwork and willingness to contribute to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
