Job summary

SGA Development is seeking an experienced engineering leader in Johannesburg to guide and grow a software engineering team. You will own delivery end-to-end, partner with product to plan and ship features, and drive quality, reliability and on-call health across the team.

The role emphasizes hiring and onboarding, building strong onboarding programs, and representing the team in broader engineering and strategic discussions.

Qualifications

Proven experience leading software engineering teams (5+ years) and 2+ years as a people manager.
Hands-on software engineering background with architectural decision-making ability.
Knowledge of sports betting or online gaming industries is a plus.
Familiarity with regulatory/compliance considerations in multi-jurisdictional contexts (desirable).

Run meaningful 1:1s, give honest feedback, support career growth and have the difficult conversations when you need to.
Own delivery for your team end to end.
Partner with product to plan, prioritise and deliver a healthy mix of features, platform work and improvements.
Track progress, surface risks early and clear blockers, without micromanaging the engineers doing the work.
Be accountable for the quality, reliability and operability of what your team owns.
Set the bar for engineering quality, testing and ways of working within your team, and uphold it.
Lead your team through incidents and post-mortems, and drive lasting improvements in performance, resilience and on‑call health.

Requirements

Proven experience leading software engineering teams (typically 5+ years in engineering plus 2+ years as a people manager), with a track record of growing engineers and shipping consistently.
Strong technical foundations from a hands‑on software engineering background, with enough depth to make good architectural and trade‑off calls without writing day‑to‑day production code yourself.
In‑depth knowledge of sports betting markets, including odds calculation, betting types and market trends (desirable).
Previous experience in the online gaming or casino industry (desirable).
Familiarity with gambling regulations and compliance requirements in various jurisdictions (desirable).
Experience in developing and executing customer retention strategies (desirable).
Experience leading agile teams in a fast‑paced, product‑driven environment.
Adaptability – you stay sharp, productive and positive in fast‑moving environments.
