A leading recruitment agency in Durban seeks an experienced slitter operator with a minimum of 5 years in the print or packaging industry. The role requires setting up and operating slitting machines, performing quality checks, and adhering to safety standards. Successful candidates should have a grade 12 education and be fast learners, demonstrating a strong focus on quality control and productivity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESMachine Setup & OperationSet up, operate, and monitor slitting machines to cut rolls of printed or unprinted packaging material (e.g., film, paper, foil) to required widths and lengths.Select appropriate blades, tension settings, and operating speeds according to job specifications.Load jumbo rolls and ensure correct alignment to prevent material wastage.Quality ControlInspect material for print accuracy, color consistency, registration, and surface defects before and during slitting.Ensure finished rolls meet customer and internal quality standards, including width, edge finish, core size, and roll diametercomplete quality checks and record results as per company QC procedures (ISO / FSSC where applicable).
Material Handling & StorageLabel, weigh, palletize, and safely store finished rolls according to customer or production requirements.Handle raw materials and finished products to prevent contamination or damage (important in food-grade packaging environments).
Maintain accurate records of material usage and scrap generated.
Maintenance & Machine CarePerform basic machine maintenance, blade changes, lubrication, and cleaning.Report mechanical issues or faults to maintenance teams to minimize downtime.Ensure all machine guards and safety systems are in place and functional.
Safety & ComplianceAdhere to workplace safety procedures, including lockout / tagout, PPE requirements, and safe lifting practices.Follow industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., SANS, HACCP / FSSC).
Maintain a clean and safe working area to prevent accidents and contamination.
Productivity & EfficiencyMonitor production output to achieve daily / shift targets.Minimize waste through careful setup, material handling, and continuous process improvementcommunicate production status, delays, and efficiency concerns to supervisors or production planners.
Documentation & ReportingComplete production records, job cards, waste sheets, and traceability documentation.Assist with stock reporting and ensure correct material identification (barcodes / roll labels).
Participate in shift handovers with clear communication of job progress.
