Job description

Introduction

Novamarine, a division of the Sturrock Grindrod Maritime Group, is seeking to hire a permanent Service Technician within our Technologies Division. All suitably qualified and experienced candidates are invited to apply. The purpose of the Service Technician is to service technological equipment and ensure all work and equipment comply with prescribed standards and applicable legislation.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure adherence to all health and safety rules and regulations, including ISO, SABS, MARPOL, SOLAS, and OEM standards.
  • Service and recondition equipment such as oil in water separators, reverse osmosis plants, evaporative freshwater generators, centrifuges, cathodic marine growth protection systems, impressed current corrosion systems, electrical diagnostics, fault finding, and stern tube sealing systems.
  • Test equipment according to instructions before starting work.
  • Conduct regular site audits and recommend safety improvements to management.
  • Maintain up-to-date and timely completion of administrative tasks such as job cards and equipment marking.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety measures at all times.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workshop/work site.
  • Act as a team leader, managing and guiding junior technicians and assistants according to the scope of work.
  • Liaise directly with customers, suppliers, and OEMs.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum Matric or equivalent.
  • Trade qualification / Red Seal in mechanical engineering (e.g., fitter, machinist, marine diesel mechanic) and/or marine engineering qualification.
  • Willingness to undergo OEM training.
  • Skilled in electrical diagnostics and circuits.

Experience

  • At least five years of experience in a multi-skilled mechanical role within the marine environment, focused on auxiliary ship equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of ship electrical infrastructure is advantageous.
  • Experience as an OEM representative or maker's man is advantageous.

Required Skills

  • Ability to travel offshore and locally as required.
  • Valid and clean Code 8 driver’s license; Code 10 is advantageous.
  • Physically fit and able to work in harsh conditions.
  • Strong interaction skills with customers and colleagues.
  • Effective decision-making abilities.
  • Well-organized with attention to detail and sober habits.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word & Excel).
  • Strong mechanical skills and team leadership abilities.
  • Ability to work after hours when required.
