A consulting engineering company based in Cape Town is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer specializing in high-voltage power transmission. The role involves designing power systems, managing projects, and providing mentorship to junior staff. Candidates should have a BSc Eng or equivalent with at least 7 years of relevant experience. Professional registration with ECSA is required. The position offers an opportunity to contribute to significant energy projects in South Africa.
ResponsibilitiesPlan and design high-voltage (HV) power transmission and distribution infrastructure (kV–kV). Manage multiple projects simultaneously and provide guidance in developing engineering deliverables for substation projects. Prepare layouts, drawings, and specifications for substation equipment, construction, and electrical systems. Perform electrical calculations and power system studies for utility, industrial, and commercial networks. Develop comprehensive project design documentation, technical specifications, and detailed design packages in compliance with local, international, and client standards. Coordinate design activities and requirements with project stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams. Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior engineers, designers, and drafters. Monitor and ensure adherence to project design schedules; provide regular progress updates to project managers and business unit leaders. Review and coordinate technical contract documents and contractor design submissions. Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and Safety Management Systems. Identify and implement design modifications as required. Plan, manage, and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to contractor technical queries. Plan and coordinate pre-commissioning and commissioning activities. Attend and contribute to site and project technical meetings. Manage final documentation handover processes. Prepare Expressions of Interest (EOIs), tenders, and Requests for Quotation (RFQs).
Support business development and marketing initiatives. Ensure compliance with Iyanda's Quality Management System (QMS).
Contribute to continuous improvement of company processes and quality systems. Valid South African driver's licence (no endorsements) and own reliable transport.
In-depth knowledge of power system equipment (primary plant) and related structural and civil requirements. Strong project administration and coordination capabilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective problem-solving and teamwork abilities. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Strong working knowledge of Bentley MicroStation. Thorough understanding of national and international engineering codes and standards. Well-developed interpersonal and leadership skills. Analytical thinking and self-management skills. Strong presentation and technical report writing ability. Experience within the power utility industry (Eskom experience essential).
BSc Eng or B.Eng in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years relevant post-qualification technical experience; ORB.Tech in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 10 years relevant post-qualification technical experience at engineering level. Professional Registration : Registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a Professional Engineer (Pr Eng) or Professional Engineering Technologist (Pr Tech Eng).
7–10 years of post-qualification technical experience in high-voltage (HV) power transmission and distribution infrastructure within the power utility sector. Eskom distribution / transmission experience will be a strong advantage.
