About the Role

Our client, a renowned high-performance athletics center located in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Sports Scientist to lead its athlete monitoring and performance enhancement programs. This critical role involves applying cutting-edge sports science principles to optimize the performance of elite track and field athletes, as well as supporting coaches in their strategic planning. You will be responsible for designing and implementing athlete testing protocols, analyzing physiological and biomechanical data, and providing actionable insights to improve training efficacy and reduce injury risk. This hybrid role requires a blend of on-site laboratory work, field testing, and remote data analysis and reporting. The ideal candidate is a thought leader in sports science with a passion for athletics and a proven ability to translate complex data into practical coaching strategies.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage comprehensive athlete assessment protocols, including physiological, biomechanical, and performance testing.
• Analyze athlete data (e.g., GPS, heart rate, power output, jump testing, lactate profiling) to inform training prescription.
• Develop and implement periodized training plans in collaboration with coaches, focusing on physical conditioning and performance optimization.
• Monitor athlete training loads, fatigue levels, and recovery status, providing recommendations to prevent overtraining and injury.
• Utilize advanced technologies and software for data collection, analysis, and reporting.
• Conduct research to evaluate the effectiveness of training interventions and explore new performance enhancement strategies.
• Provide expert advice and mentorship to coaches and athletes on sports science principles.
• Collaborate with the medical team to support athlete rehabilitation and safe return to sport.
• Prepare detailed reports and presentations on athlete performance trends and program effectiveness.
• Stay current with the latest scientific literature and advancements in sports science and coaching.
• Contribute to the development and delivery of sports science education within the center.

Requirements

• Master's or Ph.D. in Sports Science, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, or a related field.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience working as a Sports Scientist with elite athletes, preferably in track and field or a similar discipline.
• Proven expertise in physiological and biomechanical assessment techniques.
• Strong proficiency with performance analysis software and data management systems (e.g., MATLAB, R, SPSS, specialized sports science platforms).
• Experience with athlete monitoring technologies (e.g., GPS units, accelerometers, wearable sensors).
• Demonstrated ability to translate complex data into practical, actionable insights for coaches and athletes.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
• Strong project management and organizational skills.
