Senior Scientist / Engineer (Data & Image Analyst)

Mintek has an exciting career opportunity for a Senior Scientist / Engineer within the Mineralogy Division.

The incumbent will develop software tools and data models to improve interpretation of mineralogical data (numerical, images) for research or commercial service, within time and cost schedules and in compliance with Mineralogy’s quality standards.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Head/Divisional manager to maintain and expand project work from the mining/metallurgical industry and related research agencies.
  • Ascertain client and industry needs and propose appropriate research and commercial projects.
  • Lead and execute advanced projects involving algorithm/software development, modelling, simulation and interpretation of mineral behaviour.
  • Ensure projects meet agreed time schedules, contain costs for the Division and deliver valid, professionally presented conclusions.
  • Comply with internal administration requirements (time capture, business governance, reporting, project planning/management).
  • Develop protocols and workflows for optimal operation of specialized imaging equipment.
  • Document work and procedures accurately; produce advanced reports, publications and conference contributions.
Job Knowledge and Experience
  • 3–5+ years experience in data and image (2D/3D) analysis using commercial or open‑source platforms (e.g. Matlab, Python, R, Image J, VG StudioMax, Aviso).
  • Coding and/or modelling experience, preferably with mineralogical/metallurgical/chemical data.
  • Drafting proposals to generate funding for project work.
Client Relationship Management

The incumbent must be highly organised, able to multi‑task and pay attention to detail, with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications

Minimum: MSc/MEng in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering (Electronic/Electrical) or equivalent.

Ideal: PhD.
