Job description
Senior Pharmacist position available in Newcastle

An experienced and dedicated Senior Pharmacist is required for permanent employment at a reputable, community-focused retail pharmacy based in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

The successful candidate will play a key role in providing professional pharmaceutical services, ensuring patient care of the highest standard, and maintaining compliance with SAPC regulations and retail operational requirements.

Industry: Retail Pharmacy (Healthcare).

Salary: ±R52 101.20 (Gross) / ±R39 864.98 (Net after tax & UIF).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Dispensing & Patient Care
    • Accurately interpret and dispense prescriptions in accordance with SAPC guidelines.
    • Provide patient counselling, guidance, and after-care support with empathy and professionalism.
    • Uphold ethical pharmaceutical practices and safeguard patient confidentiality.
  • Stock & Inventory Control
    • Manage ordering, receiving, and control of Schedule drugs and other pharmaceutical products.
    • Conduct regular stock counts and maintain inventory accuracy.
    • Oversee expiry management, temperature monitoring, and cold-chain compliance.
  • Compliance & Governance
    • Ensure adherence to Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) and relevant legislation.
    • Maintain complete and up-to-date data books, QCPs, and internal quality records.
    • Comply with all SAPC, SAHPRA, and DOH requirements and audits.
    • Remain compliant with CPD requirements and professional development standards.
  • Administration & Systems
    • Operate effectively on the Unisolv system for dispensing, claims submission, and stock management.
    • Apply relevant ICD-10 codes accurately for medical aid and patient billing purposes.
    • Maintain accurate patient and script records in line with pharmacy regulations.
  • Operational Support
    • Assist the Responsible Pharmacist when required, including acting as locum during leave or peak periods.
    • Work collaboratively with dispensary staff, assistants, and front-shop personnel to ensure efficient daily operation.
    • Supervise support staff in line with SAPC scope and ensure effective teamwork.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm / equivalent) – Essential.
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) – in good standing.
  • Minimum 3 years’ retail pharmacy experience – Essential.
  • Unisolv system proficiency – Required.
  • Sound working knowledge of ICD-10 coding and claims submission.
  • Bilingual in English and Afrikaans (advantageous).
  • Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport preferred.

Working Hours:

  • Monday to Friday: 09h00 – 18h00 (1-hour lunch break).
  • Saturdays: 3 per month – 08h00 – 13h00.
  • Overtime: As required when the Responsible Pharmacist is on leave (08h00 – 09h00 and on remaining Saturdays, by mutual agreement).
