Job summary

Placements24 in Welkom, Free State, seeks a Senior Organic Chemist focused on synthesis to advance pharmaceutical targets. You will design multi-step routes, optimize reactions, and work across medicinal, analytical, and process chemistry teams in a collaborative R&D setting.

The role requires a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and at least 5 years of hands-on pharma/biotech synthesis experience, with strong English communication and a track record of delivering challenging targets.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or closely related field.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on synthetic organic chemistry experience in pharma/biotech.
• Experience with asymmetric synthesis, organometallics and heterocycles.
• Proficiency in spectroscopic/chromatographic techniques for characterization.
• Strong problem-solving and meticulous experimental approach.
• Excellent English communication and ability to work both independently and in a team.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute multi-step synthetic routes for APIs and intermediates.
• Optimize conditions to maximize yield and purity.
• Purify and characterize compounds using NMR, MS, HPLC and GC.
• Troubleshoot challenges and develop alternative strategies.
• Mentor junior chemists and document findings thoroughly.
• Collaborate with medicinal, analytical and process chemists to advance programs.
• Contribute to regulatory documentation and safety compliance.
