Overview
Our client in the Telecommunications industry is currently looking for a Senior Network Engineer, in Stellenbosch, Cape Town.
Responsibilities
- Plan and design a cost‑effective network and services that meet product specifications and service launch times.
- Effective management of infrastructure bandwidth capacity of the core and backbone networks.
- Handle technical negotiations with partners on related projects.
- Purchase appropriate network equipment (routers, switches, transceivers, servers, etc.) at cost‑effective prices and in compliance with the company's Procurement Policy.
- Using best common practices, responsible for planning and testing of network equipment and associated applications, software, hardware and upgrade cycles.
- Design, develop and document standards, processes and procedures for all systems (hardware and software), implementations and configurations, in accordance with the company's own standards, processes and procedures.
- Manage equipment and software vendor / supplier relationships.
- Evaluate and conduct compatibility tests for new network equipment (hardware and software) for integration into the overall backbone.
- Responsible for creating, implementing and managing long‑term engineering plans and objectives.
- Evolve the IP network.
- Manage the SDH transport and service networks.
- Manage bandwidth and equipment upgrades.
- Constantly study the technology landscape that the company operates in and beyond to ensure best‑in‑class technology and services are used.
- Manage implementation and deployment of all network equipment, including planning, design, procurement, delivery, installation, turn‑up and ongoing operations.
- Ensure company‑wide adoption, implementation and support of IPv6.
- Deploy, manage and refine IP Transit, local, regional and international IP peering relationships.
- Ensure very high levels of proficiency and subject matter education and expertise of engineering staff as well as all staff as and when required.
Requirements
- Qualification: Grade 12 + Degree in related field.
- Experience: At least 10 years hands‑on experience planning, designing and building large‑scale IP / MPLS networks.
- Working knowledge of IP routing protocols such as OSPF, IS‑IS and BGP.
- In‑depth Knowledge of RADIUS.
- Working knowledge of MPLS and IPv6.
- Working knowledge and experience in managing IP Transit and Internet Exchange Point peering relationships.
- Working knowledge of Linux / UNIX operating systems such as Linux, FreeBSD, e.t.c.
- Working knowledge of captive networks.
- Ability to operate under pressure.
- High level of EQ.
- Proven success in leading of distribution teams in Townships.
