Job summary

Takealot Group in Cape Town is seeking a Senior Database Administrator to join the Engineering & Product team. You will deploy, operate, and manage databases supporting Takealot features, resolve operational issues, optimize queries, and contribute to the roadmap in a fast-paced agile environment.

You will mentor junior DBAs, design backups, replication, security, DR, and collaborate with developers, network and systems teams to meet database requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or 5-7 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL and other relational databases and strong SQL skills.
• Proficiency with non-RDBMS systems such as MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, Elasticsearch, or Solr.
• Strong knowledge of database internals, backups, replication, security, and performance tuning.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot slow queries and assist developers with optimisable SQL queries.
• Assist developers with schema design, changes, and admin tasks.
• Design and implement backups, replication, security, and disaster recovery processes.
• Monitor database health, performance metrics, and security; ensure compliance with standards.
• Mentor junior DBAs and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
