Job summary

Kirby Group Engineering in Cape Town is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to lead engineering activities on a construction project, coordinating the technical design from on-site installation through commissioning in line with Kirby Group’s vision and standards.

You will work with a vibrant, multi-functional team to deliver projects safely, on time and within budget, while maintaining quality. The role requires 5+ years of project engineering experience and strong leadership and communication skills.

Qualifications

• 3rd level qualification in Building Services Engineering / Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
• 5+ years of project engineering experience with a mechanical contractor.
• Experience delivering small to medium mechanical projects.
• Commercial awareness.
• Ability to walkthrough mechanical systems to ensure compliance.
• Experience developing technical submittals and technical reviews.
• Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental systems and procedures.
• Ability to multi-task and manage priorities.
• Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
• Strong record keeper and administrator.
• Leads and mentors juniors or graduates.
• Innovates and leads in mechanical/technical activity.
• Plans and manages projects effectively.
• Solves problems analytically and decisively.
• Focused on EHS and Quality Work Management Systems.

Responsibilities

• Collate all design documents and drawings.
• Attend project handover meetings.
• Evaluate value engineering or cost saving opportunities.
• Prepare coordinated drawings covering mechanical, electrical, sprinkler, structural and architectural elements.
• Review design specifications for compliance of drawings and submittals.
• Assist in weekly progress reports.
• Assist in compiling Technical Submittals.
• Process requisitions and issue purchase orders.
• Verify receipt of equipment and materials on site.
• Clarify queries with design team via RFIs.
• Coordinate with design team, contractors and internal project team on technical issues.
• Attend technical meetings with design team and contractors.
• Carry out document control and transmit information.
• Prepare method statements and risk assessments.
• Organise and supervise subcontractors.
• Perform quality control through inspections and snagging, including P&ID walks.
• Populate test packs and track status.
