Placements24 seeks a Senior Marine Biologist to join our client in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, to lead coastal ecosystem research and inform conservation policies. The role combines fieldwork, data analysis, and dissemination through publications and presentations.

You will design and manage complex projects, supervise researchers, and collaborate with partners, using R, MATLAB, and GIS among other tools. A PhD with 6+ years of experience and leadership is essential.

Qualifications

• PhD in Marine Biology, Oceanography, Ecology or related field.
• 6+ years post-doctoral research with strong publication record.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and manage complex marine research projects focusing on coastal and marine ecosystems.
• Conduct field research, including surveys, sample collection and data recording, often involving SCUBA diving.
• Analyze biological, chemical, and physical data using statistical and modeling software.
• Interpret research findings and prepare high-quality reports, publications and grant proposals.
• Present research results at national and international conferences and workshops.
• Supervise and mentor junior researchers and staff.
• Oversee lab equipment and ensure safety protocols.
• Collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and other institutions on conservation initiatives.
• Contribute to public outreach and education on marine conservation.
• Ensure activities comply with ethical guidelines and environmental regulations.
• Manage project budgets and timelines.
