Placements24 is seeking a highly experienced Senior Legal Officer for our client in the renewable energy sector, based in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. The role requires the candidate to be physically present at the office and focuses on energy law, project development, and regulatory compliance.

You will lead complex contract work, advise on permits and licenses, manage due diligence, and support strategic business objectives while liaising with external counsel and regulators.

• Admitted Attorney with at least 10 years post-qualification experience in energy, infrastructure, or project finance.

About the Role

Our client, a major player in the renewable energy sector, is looking for a highly experienced Senior Legal Officer to join their established legal team. This role is based in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal , and requires the candidate to be physically present at the office. You will be responsible for providing expert legal advice and support on a wide range of matters, with a particular focus on energy law, project development, and regulatory compliance. This is a critical position that demands a deep understanding of the energy industry's legal intricacies, contract management, and dispute resolution. You will play a key role in ensuring the company's projects adhere to all legal and regulatory requirements, minimizing risks, and supporting strategic business objectives. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical skills and a proven track record of managing complex legal challenges within the energy sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive legal advice on energy projects, including power purchase agreements, EPC contracts, and land acquisition.
• Review, draft, and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts relevant to the energy sector.
• Ensure compliance with South African energy regulations, environmental laws, and related legislation.
• Manage legal aspects of project development from inception through to operation.
• Conduct legal due diligence for new projects and investments.
• Advise on regulatory applications, permits, and licenses required for energy operations.
• Handle dispute resolution and litigation support related to contractual matters and project execution.
• Stay abreast of legislative changes and industry trends affecting the energy sector.
• Liaise with external counsel, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
• Contribute to the development of legal strategies and policies for the company.

Requirements

• Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience.
• Specialized experience in energy law, project finance, or infrastructure projects is essential.
• Proven expertise in drafting and negotiating complex commercial contracts, particularly in the energy sector.
• Strong understanding of South African energy legislation, environmental law, and property law.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking abilities.
• High level of professionalism and integrity.
• Demonstrated ability to manage demanding workloads and meet tight deadlines.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills for engaging with diverse stakeholders.
• Experience in litigation or alternative dispute resolution is a plus.
