Job summary

A leading technology university in Cape Town is seeking a candidate to teach Physics up to Honours level in Engineering qualifications. The successful candidate will contribute to curriculum development and engage in research. A PhD in Physics or equivalent and relevant teaching experience are essential. Job Purpose

The successful candidate will teach Physics up to Honours level in Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering qualifications. The successful candidate will also contribute to curriculum development (especially at postgraduate level). Furthermore, the successful candidate will provide support to the Department in pursuit of its objectives in learning and teaching, research, Work Integrated Learning, and community engagement.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • A doctoral (NQF level 10) qualification in Physics or equivalent.
  • At least four years' relevant full-time working experience, which must include at least two years in a lecturing role at a higher education institution that involved teaching Physics
  • Research and postgraduate supervision commensurate with Institutional requirements
  • Experience in curriculum development
Recommended
  • Industry experience would be advantageous
  • Experience teaching or working in an Engineering context would be advantageous
  • Being an existing associate member of NITheCS would be advantageous
  • Knowledge of and experience with high-performance computing environments would be advantageous
  • Skills in a code-based document preparation system (e.g., LaTeX) would be advantageous
Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

The successful candidate will be expected to perform in the following areas:

  • Teach Physics subjects up to Honours level, including in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering qualifications
  • Develop innovative, reusable learning and teaching materials for the subjects being taught (e.g., lecture notes, practicals, tutorials, online content)
  • Perform appropriate academic and administrative duties in the Department, including leadership functions
  • Participate in curriculum development, particularly at postgraduate level
  • Participate in research and produce DHET-accredited publications at a rate of at least 1 publication unit per year
  • Participate in supervision or co-supervision of postgraduate students
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance activities of the Department
  • Assist with marketing and student recruitment activities
  • Contribute to activities of the National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences (NITheCS) of which CPUT is a node
  • Perform other functions as may be assigned by the Head of Department
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language relevant to theoretical and computational sciences (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
