Job Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to teach Haematology and associated subjects at undergraduate level in the Biomedical Sciences Department with the aim of producing future Medical Laboratory Science graduates who will be able to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. In addition, a further purpose is to produce graduates who will be able to advance to higher qualifications (MSc & PhD) as well as participate in research. The incumbent will be expected to participate in the departmental research and postgraduate programme.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Requirements: Senior Lecturer
(Please note that preference will be given to candidates that meets the minimum requirements at Senior Lecturer level)

  • A Doctoral degree in the field of Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification. Additionally, a base qualification in the field of Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist in the field of Haematology and/or Clinical Pathology: Independent Practice. Preference will be given to applicants with registration in the field of Haematology.
  • At least four (4) years relevant lecturing experience in Higher Education and/or five (5) years clinical practice experience in a Haematology/Clinical Pathology medical diagnostic laboratory. Preference will be given to applicants with lecturing experience
  • A record of postgraduate student supervision and publications in accredited journals.

Minimum Requirements: Lecturer

  • Master’s degree in the field of Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification. Additionally, a base qualification in the field of Biomedical Sciences or equivalent qualification.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist in the field of Haematology and/or Clinical Pathology: Independent Practice. Preference will be given to applicants with registration in the field of Haematology.
  • At least two (2) years relevant lecturing experience in Higher Education and/or four (4) years clinical practice experience in a Haematology/Clinical Pathology medical diagnostic laboratory. Preference will be given to applicants with lecturing experience

  • Lecturing in Haematology and other subjects related to the training of Laboratory Scientists in the BHSc programme
  • Develop appropriate teaching material for haematology and other subjects being offered on the BHSc programme
  • Perform academic administration tasks
  • Promote and participate in community engagement projects and maintain links with role players
  • Be involved and assist with quality assurance and regulatory body accreditation
  • Be involved in any other teaching, learning and administrative skills as required by the department
  • Research and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects and dissertations
  • Enrolment for the HDHET or equivalent to improve lecturing skills
  • Excellent command of the English language and communication
