SENIOR LECTURER

Responsibilities
  • Lecturing at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level;
  • Supporting the SARCHi Chair in Just Energy Transition, including project management, research strategy, industry and policy engagement and skill development;
  • Academic administration and management;
  • Supervising postgraduate students;
  • Participation in the Department’s strategic initiatives related to teaching, research, community engagement, and fundraising;
  • Scientific research and publications in accredited academic journals.
Minimum Requirements
  • A relevant doctorate in the field of energy and environmental economics;
  • At least three years relevant tertiary lecturing experience and demonstrated competence;
  • At least two quality-adjusted accredited publications and/or equivalent recognised scholarly outputs (accepted and/or published);
  • At least two completed Master’s students or involvement with PhD supervision; and
  • Evidence of professional engagement.

  • Strong communication and academic writing skills
  • Proven ability to work in a multidisciplinary and international research teams, engaging with policy makers, industry and community stakeholders;
  • Knowledge of foundational theories, concepts in the subject area;
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, including teaching, research, and administrative duties, effectively;
  • Skills to prioritise tasks and deadlines in a busy academic environment;
  • Demonstrating respect for students, colleagues, and ideas from diverse cultural, social, and academic backgrounds;
  • Proficiency in digital literacy and seamless integration of technology in teaching and research activities;
  • Being dependable, punctual, and accountable for tasks and responsibilities;
  • Ability to understand and address the needs and concerns of students, fostering a supportive learning environment.
Added Advantages And Preferences
  • Experience in managing research projects at faculty or chair level, including grant applications and project management;
  • The potential to develop into a scholar in the discipline;
  • Editorial and peer review experience for accredited international publications;
  • Experience in cross-disciplinary collaboration, particularly in energy, climate and development research.

PLEASE NOTE: As part of the selection process, shortlisted candidates will be required to prepare and present a simulated lecture and/or technical report to a screening panel.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED/UMVUSO medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
