Job summary

Zohorecruit seeks a senior Java developer to join a live product team in Pretoria or Somerset West. You will work with analysts, ensure changes do not disrupt the production system, and mentor peers while adhering to existing standards.

You will own features from design through deployment, write tests, and focus on performance, availability, and maintainability of the codebase.

Qualifications

• A relevant tertiary qualification in Engineering or Computer Science, or matric plus the experience below.
• 8–10 years in a software development environment, with at least 5 years as a senior developer in a team.
• Strong Java. Java 8+ required; Java 17 preferred.
• Java EE server-side development, JPA/Hibernate, and an app server/container; Karaf preferred.
• Maven, Git and Jenkins. SQL and a relational database. Derby is relevant.
• ReactJS, Bootstrap, CSS3 and HTML5, plus REST or SOAP.
• A working knowledge of the SDLC as it applies to a software team.
• Deliver production-quality software with own unit tests and QA support.

Responsibilities

• Support the existing product and build new functionality atop it.
• Collaborate with business analysts to translate requirements into buildable software.
• Refactor and improve code for maintainability as new requirements arrive.
• Evaluate and improve performance and high-availability behavior.
• Write unit and integration tests to verify changes.
• Root-cause analysis on bugs in integrated systems and fix test data as needed.

This is a senior Java seat on a liveproduct, not a greenfield build. The system is already in production. New workhas to fit what is there, and a change that looks fine in isolation can breaksomething three modules away. You will know the domain, work with the analysts,and ship changes that do not take the product down.

Two roles are open, in Pretoria orSomerset West. You will sit in a development team, not as a lone contractor.Mentoring is part of the job, both ways: you follow the standards that alreadywork, and you help other developers when their change does not.

What you will do:

• Supportthe existing product and build new functionality and components on top ofit.
• Work withbusiness analysts to understand the domain and turn new requirements intosomething that can actually be built.
• Refactorand improve the code so the product stays maintainable when the nextrequirement lands.
• Evaluateand improve performance and high-availability behaviour, not only featuredelivery.
• Write unitand integrated system tests that show the change works as intended.
• Doroot-cause analysis on bugs in an integrated system, including debuggingother people’s code and fixing test data when that is what is broken.
