Senior IT Systems Engineer required in Durban.

A well-known national Software Development and Media company is looking for a Senior IT Systems Engineer to join their team on a full-time permanent basis for their offices based in Durban.

Core Purpose of Job:

The primary responsibility of the Snr. IT Systems Engineer, development and support of technology infrastructure, hardware, software and office systems support and distribution, systems performance management and technology integration of functions

Provides engineering support in network operations.

Principle Deliverables:

IT Support:

  • Performs system backups and recovery
  • To provide technical, server and general desktop and system support for the allocated divisions and regions to ensure that users are able to work effectively on the company’s systems
  • Maintains data files and monitors system configuration to ensure data integrity
  • Log calls and provide support and feedback/follow ups to users, Helpdesk and Management
  • Ensures that uptime requirements are met
  • Monitor routers, email servers and attend to connectivity issues across the WAN
  • Network Administration and configuration
  • Work with different regions to ensure that any enhancements in Information Technology development is implemented and is consistent across all regions with good practice
  • Positive attitude, goal-oriented, and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Maintain calls on Helpdesk System
  • Provide telephonic support to users
  • Offers desktop/laptop support to users
  • Provides printer support
  • Installs new desktop, laptops and printers
  • Perform user administration on servers and infrastructure
  • Provides 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support on applications and systems
  • Implement new technologies and systems when required
  • Install and configure servers
  • Ensure that backup procedures are in place
  • Assist with user support
  • Disaster recovery procedure and protocols
  • Designing and implementing firewall solutions
  • Implement and maintain security procedures
  • Training of all users
  • Support of all users
  • Manage bandwidth between VOIP and Date requirements

Project Support:

  • Participate in Group IT projects. This might require some after hours work to minimise impact on users
  • Install, configure and maintain Desktops and systems for business projects (usually off site)
  • Provide support during office hours and after hours on business projects

General IT Administration:

  • Liaise with External Service Providers for support
  • Assists with troubleshooting, backup and archiving of user and server data
  • Recording, tracking and reporting of inventory management of software, hardware, licenses and other IT supplies in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Promotes responsible usage and care of corporate equipment
  • Adherence to best practise guidelines as communicated to the IT team
  • All Hardware and Software installation
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving of Servers and systems.
  • Ensuring all desktops, printers and servers are serviced regularly and kept in good running order.
  • Standardise installations
  • Document maintenance schedule
  • Maintain full set of support software
  • Monitoring and management of storage.
  • Perform regular maintenance on servers.
  • Monitoring of servers performance.
  • Servers troubleshooting.
  • Performing of regular backups as per data
  • Documented data recovery plan
  • Managing and maintaining of installations and cabling
  • Ensuring neatness and correctness of patching
  • Network troubleshooting
  • Ensuring that documentation of network id kept up to date and accurate
  • Installation, Manage and Monitoring of comms lines and report or repair problems.
  • Manage and maintain PABX system and connectivity
  • Ensure Asset management and license tracking software is kept up to date and accurate.
  • Ensure security of services, network and data in accordance with company policies and producers
  • Recording and control of software licenses
  • Improvement of technical and systems skills

Coordination of end user training:

  • Provide user training
  • Install and setup new users
  • Oversee end user training

Nature And Scope Of Job:

  • To ensure that the IT systems in place will in the future cater for the provision of reliable information to support the growth as set out by the strategy of the organisation
  • Ongoing analysis of existing hardware and information systems and the reporting of weaknesses and strengths inherent therein
  • Ongoing research into new technology and systems
  • Customer relationship software management (CRM) software
  • Outsourcing and fulfilment software
  • Warehousing and tracking software
  • Development of systems that ensure the integration of software
  • To provide support from time to time on other sites or on project sites or at Clients
  • Provide after hour support for critical infrastructure related problems i.e. server or network down and in the case of business projects
  • Participate in weekly IT team meetings
  • To ensure that all calls are logged, managed and closed within SLA
  • To ensure Customer/Client Satisfaction
  • To Promote Team Work amongst the IT Staff

Competencies Required:

  • Knowledge of operating systems including
    • Desktop operating systems (Windows)
    • Windows NT, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2010, 2013 Server Platforms
    • Active Directory
  • Knowledge of Mac operating systems beneficial
  • Good knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Exchange, Outlook and Pop3
  • Knowledge of networking including
    • Hubs, routers, switches and cabling Infrastructure
    • Networking of LAN and WAN architectures
  • Knowledge of SQL beneficial
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • In depth and specialised knowledge of networking including
    • Hubs, routers, switches and cabling
    • Windows NT, Windows 2000, Linux, Unix, Active Directory and Desktop operating systems
  • Expert knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Exposure to Management Information Systems
