Job summary

TMF Group in Cape Town is seeking a General Ledger Senior Accountant to support the Germany Client Accounting Team, delivering high‑quality reporting, reconciliations and day‑to‑day bookkeeping under HGB and IFRS, while supervising and developing a small team.

You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, manage SPV structures, and drive process improvements in cross‑border accounting, with hybrid working and opportunities across international clients.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
• CA(SA), AGA(SA), PA(SA) or ACCA is advantageous.
• 4+ years of experience in general ledger accounting and SPV accounting.
• Exposure to IFRS and/or European GAAPs is highly advantageous.
• Fluent in English; German language skills highly appreciated, or a willingness to learn German.
• Strong MS Excel and Word skills; exposure to ERP tools (SAP, Yardi, DATEV) beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review monthly/quarterly financial reporting, day‑to‑day bookkeeping and accounts reconciliations in accordance with German GAAP (HGB) and IFRS.
• Support onboarding of new SPVs, including review of legal documents such as purchase agreements (SPA), intercompany service agreements, external loan agreements and other corporate documents as required.
• Assist with monthly and quarterly VAT returns and statistical reporting for the German central bank (Bundesbank).
• Prepare, post and review journal entries in accordance with HGB and IFRS, focusing on assets, equity, accruals and provisions.
• Manage and reconcile accounting data across DATEV, SAP, Yardi, etc., including tenant accounting and intercompany schedules.
• Oversight of payments executed by AP team and follow‑up where appropriate.
• Produce and review ad‑hoc client reporting and support junior team members.

As General Ledger Senior Accountant, you will play a critical role in supporting the TMF Germany Client Accounting Team which services clients in the markets of Capital Markets, Private Equity and Real Estate (Financial Services). You will be responsible for delivering high-quality financial reporting, accounts reconciliations and day‑to‑day bookkeeping under German Commercial GAAP (HGB), IFRS and other relevant GAAP frameworks. In collaboration with the Team Leader – Client Accounting Financial Services South Africa, you will support in supervising, coaching and developing a team of accountants, ensuring that they are well trained and motivated to deliver excellent support to internal as well as external stakeholders. You will ensure all tasks are appropriately allocated across your collaborators to meet deadlines and client expectations. The role requires exceptional organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines. You will work with complex special purpose vehicles (SPV) structures.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and review monthly/quarterly financial reporting, day‑to‑day bookkeeping and accounts reconciliations in accordance with German GAAP (HGB) and IFRS
• Support the onboarding of new SPVs, including review of legal documents such as purchase agreements (SPA), intercompany service agreements, external loan agreements and other corporate documents as required
• Support with the preparation of monthly and quarterly VAT returns and statistical reporting for the German central bank (Bundesbank)
• Prepare, post and review journal entries in accordance with HGB and IFRS, with a focus on fixed and financial assets, equity, accruals and provisions, shareholder and external loans
• Manage and reconcile accounting data across different accounting systems (DATEV, SAP, Yardi, etc.), e.g. tenant accounting, bank reconciliations, service charge reconciliations, fund flows, intercompany and external loan schedules
• Oversight of payments executed by dedicated AP team and follow‑up where appropriate
• Produce and review ad‑hoc client reporting
• Support Accountants and Junior Accountants with their tasks and provide appropriate technical advice
• Drive process improvements, system enhancements and workflow automation across the SPV accounting life cycle in cooperation with the TMF Germany Accounting & Tax Team
• Collaborate with internal and external clients and other stakeholders such as banks, auditors, lawyers and tax advisors
• Contribute to client satisfaction and be a trusted TMF business partner for internal and external clients and other stakeholders

Key Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• Professional qualification such as CA(SA), AGA(SA), PA(SA) or ACCA is advantageous
• 4+ years of experience in general ledger accounting, SPV Accounting
• Exposure to IFRS and/or any European GAAPs is highly advantageous
• Commitment to developing technical expertise in German accounting, legal and tax compliance is essential
• Fluent in English; German language skills highly appreciated, or a willingness to learn German
• Strong MS Excel and Word skills; exposure to ERP tools (SAP, Yardi, DATEV) beneficial
