Placements24 is seeking a Senior Formulation Scientist for a fully remote role based in South Africa. You will lead formulation development from early design through scale-up, shaping lifecycle management and novel dosage forms across indications.

The ideal candidate has a Ph.D./MSc in pharma sciences and 6+ years in drug product development, with GMP/regulatory insight and strong communication to mentor junior staff.

• Minimum 6 years hands-on formulation development experience.

• Excellent written and verbal communication with ability to lead remote projects.

About the Role

This fully remote position will leverage your expertise in drug product development, from early-stage formulation design through to process scale-up and lifecycle management. You will play a key role in developing novel and effective dosage forms for a diverse range of therapeutic areas. The ideal candidate possesses a deep understanding of pharmaceutical sciences, material science, and manufacturing processes, combined with a passion for scientific problem-solving. Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimize novel drug delivery systems and dosage forms (e.g., oral solids, injectables, topicals).
• Conduct pre-formulation studies to characterize drug substances and excipients.
• Develop robust manufacturing processes and ensure successful technology transfer to manufacturing sites.
• Perform stability studies and interpret data to define shelf-life and storage conditions.
• Troubleshoot formulation and manufacturing challenges, implementing effective solutions.
• Collaborate closely with analytical development, DMPK, and regulatory affairs teams.
• Prepare and review technical reports, development summaries, and regulatory submission documents.
• Stay abreast of new technologies, scientific literature, and industry trends in pharmaceutical formulation.
• Mentor junior scientists and contribute to the scientific strategy of the formulation development team.

Requirements

• Ph.D. or Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• A minimum of 6 years of hands-on experience in pharmaceutical formulation development, with a strong track record of successfully developing and launching drug products.
• Expertise in various dosage form technologies and solid-state chemistry.
• Proficiency in laboratory techniques for formulation development and characterization.
• Strong understanding of GMP requirements, process validation, and regulatory guidelines.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
• Superb written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting complex technical information.
• Ability to work independently and lead projects in a remote, collaborative environment.
• Experience with diverse therapeutic areas is a plus.
