Job summary

Placements24 in Paarl, Western Cape, is seeking a senior Explosives Engineer to lead blasting operations across mining sites. You will design blast patterns, ensure regulatory compliance, supervise crews, and optimize fragmentation while upholding the highest safety standards.

The ideal candidate has 7+ years in explosives engineering, a blasting engineer certification, and hands-on experience with blast modeling tools.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
Minimum 7 years' experience in explosives engineering and blast design in mining/quarrying.
Certified Blasting Engineer or equivalent qualification.
Deep knowledge of explosives types, initiating systems, and their applications.
Proven experience with blast modeling software (Orica BlastIQ, Deswik Blast).
Strong safety knowledge and adherence to regulations.

Responsibilities

Design and optimize blast patterns for fragmentation and wall stability.
Ensure safe storage, handling, and use of explosives and initiating systems per regs.
Supervise blasting crews and provide technical leadership and safety guidance.
Conduct pre-blast assessments and post-blast evaluations; recommend improvements.
Maintain records of blasting operations, inventories and incidents.
Stay updated on explosives technology and implement beneficial advancements.
Collaborate with mine planning to align blasting with production schedules.
Investigate blasting incidents or near misses and apply corrective actions.
