Job Description
As a Senior Environmental Assessment Consultant, the position requires that the applicant be the project manager for a number of projects and provide management and leadership to junior colleagues and the projects they are managing. This requires personal authority derived from experience, reputation, skill, character, and personal example. The role will involve direct involvement in project‑related work on complex and environmentally significant projects. The applicant will be expected to fulfil the following duties:
- Environmental Impact Assessment, client liaison, specialist appointments and authority management required to achieve a Record of Decision.
- Conducting environmental management projects such as Environmental Management Frameworks, Strategic Environmental Assessments, Risk Assessments and Environmental Compliance Officer duties.
- Site visits and baseline investigations to determine a project’s sensitivity, legal requirements and the scope of any specialist work that may be required.
- Conducting public participation campaigns in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Generating high‑quality and accurate reports that reflect the sensitivity of the receiving environment, the nature of the proposed project or suitable mitigation measures to reduce impacts. These reports should be written, at minimum, in compliance with legislative requirements and preferably with reference to best industry practice.
- Developing environmental control documents that will manage construction and operational level impacts.
With regard to the management of junior colleagues who are project leaders of environmental projects, the daily duties and tasks include:
- Assume an overall project management role for the team, including regular reporting to clients and internally.
- Thorough understanding of each project, including conducting inception meetings with the client and attending initial site visits.
- Ensuring that project programmes and budgets are set and adhered to, and managing deviations to timelines and budgets.
- Liaising with both clients and authorities in a professional and knowledgeable manner that results in documented decisions and a clear understanding of their requirements.
- Troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Generating reports and project management documents required for formal project control.
- Mentoring and knowledge transfer to various project leaders.
- Using the nascent quality management system implemented at the company.
- Setting a personal example of hard work, attention to detail, and ethical behaviour that leads to constant improvement of team performance.
- Administrative functions to the extent determined by the senior management team.
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
Work Experience
- 5–7 years of working experience in the environmental consulting environment, with strong practical knowledge of all types of environmental management processes.
- Experience leading junior environmental officers and possessing good leadership characteristics.
Professional Qualifications
- Registration as an Environmental Assessment Practitioner with the Environmental Assessment Practitioners Association of South Africa (EAPASA).
- Registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) or an equivalent registration is an additional benefit.
