About the Role

Our client, a prestigious engineering consultancy renowned for its work in power infrastructure, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in substation design to join their fully remote team. This role is critical in delivering high-quality engineering solutions for substation projects across the country. You will take the lead on complex design tasks, ensuring projects meet stringent technical, safety, and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities

Lead the electrical design of high voltage (HV) and medium voltage (MV) substations, from conceptualization through to detailed design and construction support. Develop single line diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, grounding systems, and protection and control philosophies. Perform power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, and arc flash analysis, utilizing specialized software. Specify major electrical equipment such as transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, busbars, and instrument transformers. Ensure designs comply with national and international standards (e.g., SANS, IEC, IEEE) and client-specific requirements. Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and protection engineers to ensure integrated and efficient substation designs. Review vendor drawings and submittals for compliance with design specifications. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers within the remote team. Conduct technical reviews and quality assurance checks on design deliverables. Support construction and commissioning phases through remote consultation and site visit coordination if necessary.

Requirements

B.Eng or B.Sc in Electrical Engineering. A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus on substation design. Proven track record in designing HV and MV substations, including both greenfield and brownfield projects. Proficiency in substation design software (e.g., ETAP, DigSilent PowerFactory, AutoCAD). In-depth knowledge of protection and control schemes, grounding, and lightning protection. Familiarity with utility standards and practices. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills, essential for remote collaboration. Ability to manage project deliverables and work independently in a remote setting. Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA is highly desirable.
