Job summary

PEP in Parow, South Africa, seeks a senior data scientist to design and implement scalable ML solutions that turn data into competitive advantages and improved customer experiences.

You will translate complex model outputs for non-technical stakeholders, mentor junior talent, and ensure adherence to best practices in MLOps, model validation and deployment. Strong Python/SQL, cloud, and BI tooling are essential.

Qualifications

• Honours in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research or a highly quantitative field (Master's degree advantageous)
• Minimum of 5 years experience in data science, with at least 2 years in a dedicated senior role
• Retail, Customer or Marketing experience is highly advantageous
• Strong proficiency in Python and SQL
• Good understanding of code repositories, git and CI/CD
• Experience with machine learning algorithms (regression, classification, clustering, etc.)
• Experience with statistical analysis and hypothesis testing
• Experience with cloud platforms (preferably GCP)
• Familiarity with data visualisation tools (e.g. Data Studio or Power BI)
• Experience with model productionisation and model tracking
• Excellent communication and presentation abilities to convey complex data insights to non-technical stakeholders
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to tackle ambiguous business problems
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment
• A self-driven team player who is results driven, assumes ownership of the given task and is committed to excellence
• Intellectual curiosity and a passion for exploring new data sources and methodologies
• Adaptability and willingness to learn new techniques and tools as needed

Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and deployment of scalable, production-grade ML models and data products within a cloud environment
• Analyse model output and complex datasets to uncover insights and trends that inform business decisions and drive growth
• Design and execute controlled experiments to test new strategies, providing statistically sound recommendations
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement models
• Communicate insights and recommendations to stakeholders and decision makers in a clear and concise manner
• Drive innovation by identifying new opportunities, data sources and methodologies for improved solutions
• Guide, mentor and upskill junior data scientists, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
• Define and enforce best practices for code quality, version control, model validation and MLOps deployment pipelines
