The core function of this role is to provide operational and strategic support through financial data collection, analysis and reporting; to participate in audits by external companies as well as regular internal audits to ensure that risks are identified promptly and corrected; to serve as the custodian of all data in Student Finances to ensure insightful analysis and reliable collection of data to ensure data integrity and availability; and to manage the personnel within the focus area as well as guide the strategic objective of Student Finances and Stellenbosch University (SU) at large.

The role serves as the Senior Financial Data Analyst for the Student Finances Division and oversees the loan and debt collection function within Student Finances.

The incumbent will report to the Director : Student Finances and work closely with the Deputy Director and Head of Bursaries.

The Student Finances Division oversees various critical areas including undergraduate bursaries and loans, encompassing NSFAS, Student Fees, Student Loans, and Student Cards.

The incumbent prepares financial reports on the University bursaries and loans model that serve management information to the Centre for Bursaries and Loans, the Committee for Bursaries and Loans (KBL), and other relevant financial environments within the University.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Process ownership – take ownership of a process within Bursaries and Student Finances and ensure it is documented, processes are followed, and improvements are initiated and implemented.
  • Includes internal controls; data capture, collection and management; internal audits by auditing companies, with special focus on year-end requirements and BEE data collection; special decisions registration and implementation; system improvements to address audit risks; and debt collection and loan management.
  • Strategic participation – participate in the strategic planning and implementation of Bursaries and Student Finances.
  • Financial data analysis and planning – conduct data analysis to support short- and long-term financial planning and strategic objectives.
  • Perform daily, monthly and year-end reconciliations between various subsystems (e.g., bursaries, Student Fees accounts and the General Ledger).
  • Support internal and external audits, provide working papers, transaction details and issue resolutions where needed.
  • Standard Operating Procedures – adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures of Bursaries and Student Finances.
  • Relationships – maintain professional and supportive internal and external stakeholder relationships.
  • Operational management – manage and coordinate staff within a specific environment or focus area.
  • Reporting – report operational matters to the line manager on a regular basis, and stand in for the line manager in their absence as required.
Job Requirements
  • Honours degree in finance, accounting, economics, statistics, or a related field.
  • At least two years' previous experience in financial planning and analysis, data analysis, or a similar role.
  • At least two to three years' managerial experience.
  • Experience in interpreting and creating financial models and recent accounting practices.
  • Proven abilities to plan, organise and prioritise.
  • Proven complex operational problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively function within a multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment.
  • Understanding of data models and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent people management, including guidance within a team context and interpersonal relationships with students, colleagues and academic staff.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills in both English and Afrikaans.
  • Proven computer skills.
